  • Have some questions on 18ft trailer

Traded my 5 x 8 Trailer & $300 cash for it. Its old & needs some paint & new tires. But considering I only paid $300 for my 5 x 8, I figure a new set of tires & paint & it needs to be wired up. Has all the lights. But for a investment of $750 total it seems like a good deal.

My first question is he didnt have a title for it. But he did have the paperwork for it & showing it tagged in his name. They told him at the office he didnt need a title to tag it. I was under the impression anything over a certain length has a title.

Also any tips on painting the metal that is rusted in spots like the fenders & such. Just want to clean it up. Also came with a hand crank come along

Yeah I took yalls advice & opened up all the windows & pulled up the carpet. Had to replace 4 boards total. I still havent actually fixed the leak itself though. Its leaking behind my toliet & at the Hot Water heater under the sink! I cant figure out how to get the toliet out to get to the leak behind it. But till I fix that leak. I have no water as of now. The leak at the Hot Water heater in the kitchen had a bypass valve & that took care of it. But there was water pouring out of the electric area on the Hot Water heater. Going to have to unplug my RV to mess with replacing the Hot Water heater

      Thanks for asking!

I don't know the rules on the title but I do know people get it tagged as a home built trailer so that may be a fall back you can use if it's needed.

Get you a can of rustoleum and go to town, may not be the prettiest but will make it look decent.

Glad to hear you got most of the damage fixed, hope you get the rest of it taken care of asap.

My neighbor recently was working on his dual jet ski trailer and he spray painted it black. It looks pretty good!

For the rust I think the best thing to do will be get as much off with a wire brush and put a thick layer of primer over the trailer before painting.

I picked up two cans of Rust-Oleumm Primer & two cans of Gloss Acrylic Enamel. I hope this will work good. If not please post up ASAP!

Im going to sand down the Rust spots on the fenders & then lay down some thick coats of primer

Also when is the best time & temp to paint in?

I also picked up SOS pads to clean up the rims on the trailer. It has some old school chrome American Racing rims on it. But they are rusted to hell & back. you cant even tell they are chrome unless you look hard. Going to try & bring these back. Any ideas

You might think about trading the regular primer, and getting the Rusty metal primer. It turns the rust inert and seals it at the same time. Sand the rusty parts smooth, prime it, and paint away.

I'd agree withb rushing/whatever ot clean the rust up and rustoleum. I'd also hit up harbor freight and get some reflector stickers to put a long it as well. Never hurts to be safe. Put them down the sides and some along the back.

I'd think it owuld take more then 2 cans though for an 18" trailer. Light coats, 2-3 coats minimum.

Google POR-15 paint. It is great on rust and doesnt look to bad.

As for the tags and title, just get it titled as a home built trailer. Its way easier and cheaper. My car trailer and both boat trailers are tagged that way.

Def going to do this. I also need to rewire the brake lights as well. I took some before pics of the trailer & will post up the before & after pics. The trailer is really cleaning up though! I powerwashed the wood & used some SOS pads on the American Racing Rims on the trailer that are rusted beyond belief, They are shining up like brand new except this one rim that has a rust ring near the lug nuts that just wont polish out, But the rust is really thick in that part. Since I have to put new tires on the rims. Im thinking about picking up about 6 two liter cokes & pouring them in a bucket & lettting each rim soak for 24 hours in the coke & then clean what ever rust is left with that Naval Jelly stuff Tx Redneck suggested.

I figure while I have the rims off I will put the trailer up on Jackstands & take my grinder & clean off all the rust patchs on the fenders, There are some big ones along with some of the Black & Blue & Grey paint that the trailer is painted. I just wonder is a grinder going to be to harsh on the fenders to get the rust off, I really want to make this trailer shine for $750 investment total!

It also came with a Hand Held Crank Come Along welded up by the Front of the trailer. It sucks that its a Hand Crank, But its better then nothing at all!

honestly, when I get my trailer it's going to get a hand crank winch. Generally speaking my arm never needs charging and so forth. Plus the cost for the power/torque you get out of the hand crank ones is a really good ratio IMO.

Only sealers I've used on wood were the standard thompsons and so forth. Not sure how they hold up to petroleum based fluids though.
