      • Man, what a crazy morning for us...

For those of you that don't know, my wife Miyako is from Tokyo. My In-laws live in the area.

We got a call from my Mom this morning asking if we had heard about the quake yet. We hadn't even gotten out of bed by then. Miyako was able to get in touch with her parents via Skype. They live about 40 miles south of Tokyo. They're pretty shaken up but everything is otherwise OK and their house is still in one piece.

My Sister-In-Law lives in Tokyo. Her family is OK. Everything was tossed around in their condo and they have no natural gas (probably a good thing at the moment) but they have power and internet access.

We were supposed to fly to Tokyo on Wednesday but that is obviously on hold. American Airlines' website indicates that no one will be flying to Tokyo until around March 25th. I expect that to change since the situation is very fluid. I just heard on NHK that Narita airport had reopened but I can't imagine they are doing much since the highway and train lines are all shut down..

Hope everything turns out okay. I've been watching some of the videos and it is shocking watching the destruction that is going on over there. I know most of Japan is built to withstand earthquakes, but I think the death toll is going to get much higher. One article I read said this is the 6th largest earthquake in world history since we've been able to measure them.

Yea, unfortunately the death toll will likely rise dramatically. The Tsunami hit Sendai which has a population of about 1million. Huge fires have broken out all over the Miyaki Prefecture. Also, it seems that they are seriously considering a plan to vent radioactive gas from the nuclear reactor to prevent a meltdown..

                The shit is beyond real...

                • I can't imagine Tokyo being a nuclear wasteland.

"At present we have no reports of any radioactive materials or otherwise affecting the surrounding areas," Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told the press. The malfunctions are occuring at the Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi power plant near Tokyo and the Tohoku Electric Power Co. facility in Onagawa. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said that all the necessary precautions are being taken to prepare for radiation leaks, including evacuating thousands of residents within a 3-mile radius of the Fukushima facility.

The 8.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Japan early March 11 blew out the cooling systems of two nuclear reactors there. An inability to cool the reactors could cause radiation leaks, and both power plants are "bracing for the worst,” according to government officials.
How close is this to Tokyo?

Fukushima is about 150-200 miles north of downtown Tokyo. The winds would likely carry any nuclear radiation towards the north and north east. Tokyo wouldn't be affected.

Also, they would vent the reactor before a meltdown occurred. it would be bad but not nearly as bad as if it were a meltdown (like Chernobyl)

                        iPhones are made in China.

                        • They're purging one of the reactors to try and keep the pressure stable. Radioactivity is already in the air now.

As much as this site will joke (me included) I really hope your family pulls through alright over there. Having been away from family for the majority of 5 years now it sucks getting bad news knowing there is nothing you can do about it.

Well at least that is a little reassuring.

The whole situation is a big cluster f.
