For those of you that don't know, my wife Miyako is from Tokyo. My In-laws live in the area.
We got a call from my Mom this morning asking if we had heard about the quake yet. We hadn't even gotten out of bed by then. Miyako was able to get in touch with her parents via Skype. They live about 40 miles south of Tokyo. They're pretty shaken up but everything is otherwise OK and their house is still in one piece.
My Sister-In-Law lives in Tokyo. Her family is OK. Everything was tossed around in their condo and they have no natural gas (probably a good thing at the moment) but they have power and internet access.
We were supposed to fly to Tokyo on Wednesday but that is obviously on hold. American Airlines' website indicates that no one will be flying to Tokyo until around March 25th. I expect that to change since the situation is very fluid. I just heard on NHK that Narita airport had reopened but I can't imagine they are doing much since the highway and train lines are all shut down..
Now, pics of said japanese wife/ sis inlaw?

More problems.
Update at 6:25 p.m. ET: Problem At Second Nuclear Plant.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. says it can no longer control pressure inside some of the reactors at a second nuclear power plant at its Fukushima facility in northeastern Japan, according to Reuters.
That plant is now the second to be placed on Japan's nuclear safety agency's emergency list today, says Kyodo News. Government officials are ordering TEPCO to release some of the vapor from another power plant, which was put on the list earlier today, according to Kyodo.

Thank goodness my In-laws are about 250 miles south..
However, the way I've been hearing it, they are not in danger of a Chernobyl type meltdown because they were successful in getting the control rods lowered down into the core. They are saying that the worst they are looking at is a Three Mile Island type meltdown.
Of course that is bad enough but Chernobyl is VASTLY worse..

I just got a pic from one of our environmental consultants of the tsunami wave sweeping into the SF bay:Originally posted by davbrucasI want to like Slow99 since people I know say he's a good guy, but just about everything he posts is condescending and passive aggressive.
Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?
You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.
