I'd find a friendly teller to contact weekly to verify if there is funds or not. Go cash it as soon as they say there is enough $$. If you take it to the client's bank and show them they usually try to help you recover your funds.

I’m too slow for the fast cars and too fast for the slow cars.

We had a check on Landmark bank that we called twice a week until it was good and I went up there and they wouldnt give a cashiers check like the other banks do. Told me to run it through again. And then it was insufficient funds again!! F checks.

          This.

You will need a signature guarantee stamp from your bank so they will convert to cashiers check if you don't have an account with the paying Bank.

What Bank is it drawn on?

Why not? $550 puts it in the realm of deep shit, and gives a fair amount of recourse. More so than if they did a charge back on a card.

Many banks won't disclose availability of funds.

x2 on calling his boss. If she has a smartphone that can use apps, she should be able to get an app that processes credit cards. She should get that, and refuse checks.

Don't take this as an insult, but never EVER hold a check for ANYONE. Legally, there is no such thing as post dating a check or asking someone to hold a check for "x" amount of days until they get paid, etc, etc. Once the person hands over the check it is for immediate deposit. And by depositing it immediately a)you know right away if the person is trying to fuck you over and you won't be an extra week behind the ball before even finding out they have insufficient funds and b)by depositing it immediately that shortens the time they have before spending more money out of their account than what the check amount is for or before anything else posts to their account.

People that like to float money, or just want to steal from others.

Then there are the places that don't accept debit or credit cards. They still have their place. Granted, it is a very small place.
