  • Oh the joys of working on your own car!!!!

Pulled the tranny out of my trans am tonight to swap in a working one. Got all the bellhousing bolts off and had the entire assembly lowered on a floor jack to about 6 inches off the floor and decided to pull off the torque converter. It slid out easily which was deceptive of its weight. When it finally dropped it landed on the end of my right pointer finger against the floor. To try to explain the amount of pain my hand is in would be pointless. I think cutting off the finger would hurt less. It wasn't cut open..it actually ruptured from one side to bleed. Just thought I would share. Now working on beer 3 along with a hydrocodone.

Something similar happened to me but with a 5lb sledge. About 4 years and my nail still wont grow right.

Yeah, they're heavy. They're not quite as bad when they're new and don't have any fluid in them, but they're still heavy.

I feel your pain. I tried to put a motor mount bolt in an ill
Aligned 396 one time. Mount slipped and crushed my finger until the engine was hoisted back off of my finger tip. Ouch!

Do certain things on the car, but none of the above mentioned are it. Got enough of that growing up with dad. There are people who get paid to do that it, and luckily for them I would rather they bust the knuckles.

I had a engine pullers legs under some POS I was working on. I had to take the harmonic balancer out in order to get the engine out. The balancer was stuck, so I grabbed it and gave it a good yank. It came free, smashing my finger into the sharp edge of the engine puller leg. That was last year and my finger is still sore if you press where it hit.

Just recently I was trying to get a spark plug loose on a 4.3L chevrolet, it was completely stuck, so I was working it back and forth. It came loose at the wrong moment and I punched the knife edge of the manifold heat shield. It was the equivalent of sticking your finger into a deli slicer.

              Being a mechanic sucks.

Since we are naming stupid stuff we have done; trying to remove a motor mount from a fully dressed 351w on a three leg motor stand and tipping it over onto myself also hurts.

I almost pulled a windstar down on myself changing the oil once. That felt pretty slick.

                      ....

My finger hurts just think about it. I would rather slice my finger half off than to cruch it. I've done both and the crush hurt 3x worse.

Nah you just have to work smart and not get yourself in a position to slip with a wrench, ratchet etc. If its that tight a place, put some gloves on. Safety glasses when using cutting tools, and atleast turn your head when hammering on a bolt with the impact, incase the socket grenades. Not to say i don't cut myself but its very rare. When i first started full time, i cut my self on a daily basis.
Guess the worst work injury was putting a cylinder head on a hemi piece of junk and slipped getting it on the dowels. Cut a 3 inch gash in my left leg, still have a scar.
