  • Spinoff: vegas craps, tips?

We're going to Vegas very soon, and I've only played craps a couple times. I know how to play, I just don't have any strategy... I just kinda throw money at the table and pray. Tips? Tricks? Suggestions?

Play the Pass Line (or Don't pass Line) with your minimal bet and the Odds Bet with your biggest wager. Come (or Don't Come) Bets are also fine, and Place Bets are also OK.

Don't play the Center Bets, Field Bet, or Big Six/Big 8 Bets, which are also known as "Proposition Bets". You do see people win those, but over time they're sucker bets.

Craps is a great game, my favorite in the casino in fact.

So minimum on the pass line, maximum on the big numbers where the marker is? Don't bet anything else?

As the king says, betting odds on the pass line is your best bet. It'll get boring when someone rolls 20+ times and you aren't betting but at least you aren't losing $20 every roll like the suckers betting the field.

Maximum behind your Pass Line Bet. The marker shows which number is the point, which is where your Pass Line and Odds Bet will be on. Come Bets work the same way as Pass Line Bets, including placement of odds. The only difference is they are placed on rolls thrown after the comeout roll.

Use Place Bets if you so choose. They are situated by the big numbers where the marker is, and can be placed on any or all numbers other than the point. You dont have to wait for them to repeat like Pass Line/Come Bets. They don't pay true odds but I've used them sometimes.

I do that myself on occasion, because after the comeout roll you're playing the same side of the odds as the house. The only downside is you're treated like a pariah by the other players and thus have to hang out like a weasel in a corner over by one of the dealers. They're cool company to BS with though.

Exactly, I enjoy craps because of the other people at the table so betting the don'ts takes all the fun out of it for me when everyone at the table is against you lol.

Your strategy is pretty much what I play, the only time I do the middle bets is when I'm drunk and on a roll. If you want some practice, I usually go on Bodog and play with the fake money.

Do yourself a favor if you are really interested in learning craps, and buy a book.

As already said the Pass Line and Come Bets are the best bets as they have the lowest house advantage. The more odds you put down the lower the house advantage gets.

On a $5 table I put down $5 on pass and come and $5 odds for points of 4,6,8,10 and $10 on 5 or 9. On a $10 table I just use single odds. If someone is on a good roll and I have already collected a few times I may bump to double odds on all (as long as I am up $50 or more). Those amounts are just to conserve my bankroll. I usually start with $100 on a $5 and $200 on a $10.

I usually cover 2 points (one on the pass line, one on the come). If I am doing well I may bump that to 3 points (1 pass, 2 Come) but only if someone is on a good roll (good meaning they have already set and made 2 points or more).

Sometimes I will just play 1 Pass and place bets on 6 and 8 (if not the point). When I play that way I bet the the following - Start with minimum unit ($6 on a $5 table or $12 on a $10). The first hit I collect the money and keep the same bet. The second hit on the same number I press the bet one unit ($6) making it either $12 on a $5 table or $18 on a $10 table. I continue to collect one and press one until my place bet hts $24 or teh shooter 7's out. Then i start over.

The pass / come betting strategy tends to do better but I have made damn good money making place bets if the shooter is throwing alot of 6's and 8's.

All other bets are sucker bets to varying degrees. While you're just learning just avoid them. It will slow the game down for you, and you will not expect big wins, but if gives you time to learn. I make proposition bets from time to time but usually on $1 bets on long shots and VERY sparingly. I just can't completely ignore them because they are so much fun to hit. On our last trip to Shreveport I bet $1 on 12 about 10 times and hit it twice. That's a $30 to 1 payout so on $10 I made $60.

Summary - Buy a simple book with all of the rules and odds. Come up with a strategy to try, practice your betting on free online craps games, hit the casino.

                  Just some advice:

While betting conservatively using table minimums on the Pass and come bets, walk away if you double your money. Go get a drink, eat, whatever, and come back again later. The longer you stay after going up like that the more likely you will lose all of your winnings.

Never try to increase your bets to make up for losses.. The majority of the time you are just going to compound your losses.. Never bet what you can't afford to lose - Craps can swing bad and fast. You can easily be out $200 betting conservatively in a matter of minutes. I usually plan on $300 per day as a hard loss limit. If you can afford more, great.

Managing your bankroll is the best way to ensure you don't lose too badly, and hang on to winnings when you do win. Betting conservatively you will never start with $100 and cash out $1,000 but you can easily double your money. I have had as many as 5 sessions in a day and usually walk away up or at worst even on 3 or 4 out of 5 sessions.

I hate betting against the table. It's just so much more fun being a right-way better. You can still win betting right way.

I'm not gambling for my job, I do it to have fun, and I have alot more fun betting with the dice.

That's what I did and was glad I had the first time I played.

There was one time in the 4 Queens where there were two of us betting against the dice, but that is very rare to see. I agree with you that it's more fun as a rule to bet with the dice, but the only reason I see other players get pissed at a wrong bettor is that they don't completely understand the game and think that you're betting against them personally, whereas actually you're simply betting with the house.

Hell, I have been at tables where 4-6 people are betting no pass and don't. Alot of people bet against in Shreveport I have seen. My favorite time is when I am shooting, everyone else (or the majority) are betting Don't and I start hitting points.

I never get pissed at them though. I don't care how they play and it doesn't impact me.

I don't buy into alot of the typical craps BS anyways. I rarely get pissed at others actions. People buying in in the middle of a roll irritates me a little but no biggie. I also don't care if people talk to me when I am shooting. I don't do those things myself, but try not to let others get to me. On a slower table I often find myself helping out new players, which I really enjoy. The last time we went I started helping a couple that were trying it out for the first time. They literally bought in with like $25 and I saw them later than night with at least a couple of hundred.

I love cheap tables but they are usually so full it's not worth it to me. I don't enjoy squeezing in on a table. There are places off the strip that have $1 games too, I think there might be one or two still under a dollar during the day.

I bet however I want, if someone at the table has a problem with it, they can go fuck themselves. I just tell people to mind their own fucking business and if they get mouthy have the pit boss throw them out.
