  • Oil Pan repair

Hey fellas, I hit my oil pan and have a slow leak (1/8 - 1/4 quart per 24hours). The damage is a scrape that penetrated through. I'm looking to JBweld it so I thought I would check in with the masters of Redneck Engineering known as DFWM before I do it.

The oil pan is on a 2018 Mini Countryman S ALL 4 with the 2.0 turbo. It appears to be aluminum but I'm not 100% sure. I just know it isn't ferrous.

Which JBweld do you think I should use for this repair?

I plan to drain the oil to insure it doesn't leak while the epoxy is setting.

    Thanks Fellas...

A friend used the regular stuff to repair a transmission pan.

That may indeed be the route I take. Just looking to see what is the best route.

        Fel Pro Ultra Black

Used it on a cracked alum. Ford Fusion oil pan, still holding today

Yea, I got the high temp stuff. It says it's good for steel or aluminum. I'm just waiting for the oil to drip clear of that crack then I'll apply it and reuse the oil.

You fail at being a redneck.

My son knocked a hole in his Audi S4 in the middle of
NM. on I-40 in the truck stop. He called me in a panic
so, I sent him in to get some finger nail polish remover, steel wool
or a Brillo pad and JB Weld. The large hole was sealed with
the JB and Brillo pad till he sold the beast years later.

hehe , well if it was a 2008 instead of a 2018 i wouldn't have brought it up..

Also you mentioned spending 12k in upgrades on your Jeep in another thread.. there's a meme here somewhere

Used JB Weld on one of my engines to temporarily repair a pin hole in the steel oil pan...

It's been on there since 2005 and still has yet to leak a drop.

Just make sure the surfaces to be bonded are dry & clean, free of oil or grease residue

*Caveat - If you think it may be damaged again due to road conditions, etc.. maybe it would be best to just patch it..

Yeah screw all that JB well shit unless it's only temporary. Maybe it holds... maybe it don't..

I'd pull the pan and weld it up.

It's got the JBWeld High Heat on it now. So we'll see how that goes.

I prepped and cleaned the area with a wire wheel brush and brake cleaner. I'm refilling the pan this morning and letting it sit for a couple hours before I drive it.

Is there any skid plates or other guards that can be added to keep from damaging the pan again?
