  • Selling a used car - what to look out for?

Its been a long time since I last did a private sale of a car. Walk me through ways I could get fucked over.

Obviously no personal checks, no certified checks, no money orders, and don't want to deal with cash...

That leaves a cashiers check or wire transfer, right?

Why not cash? Too much at one time?

I mean, I see your point... I'm just being paranoid lately. I guess I'd do cash if it were at a bank.
Too many people around here (Galleria / River Oaks area of Houston) have been robbed after being followed home lately.

A friend of a friend was literally shot in the face in his driveway last month. Drove a McLaren to a local restaurant, and either a valet got the address from an insurance card in the car (this was the initial suspicion at least) or he was followed from the valet stand, guy and his wife were met in their driveway as their gate closed, robbed of jewelry, etc. Probably could have been even worse - she was wearing a Cartier bracelet, and you can only get those off with a screwdriver. After threating her and shooting him, they finally left the couple and went in the house for a minute before leaving.

Hell it happened again one mile from us just last week (minus the face shooting).

Cash only unless a teller hands you a cashiers check.

keep the plates and take off toll tag.

Fill out and sign a form 130-u (I think that is the number).

Print them a vehicle transit form.

Sign and date title, and form 130.

Notify the state (you can do it online) you sold the car.

I have been burned a few times by not keeping the plates etc and if they whine about the plates tough shit.

Cash is king, get a pen and/or check the water mark and security strip on every bill. If you have to get a cashiers check, google the banks phone number and verify the funds before handing over the title. Keep your plates unless you like getting toll charges. Get online with the license plate number and last 4 of the vin and report that it's been sold.

Last one I sold, met them at their bank, the cashier made out a cashiers check to me and I signed the forms.
Weeks later I got a toll bill
              Cant be too careful

Is the toll bill the only reason to keep the plates? I ask because I've got a guy who's planning to fly here from Utah, and drive it home, would I expect him to drive without plates? We were talking a cash, but now you've got me thinking, where do I get a liars pen?

He can get a temp plate for 10-30 bucks depending on the state before he leaves

Pretty much. You can also report it to the state with their online form, but make sure to get their name, address, phone number, or the toll companies will still hound you.

A CF bill pen can be had anywhere these days, but like Office Depot has them for like $10.xx for a pack of four or five. Txtangnut above posted was I was going to post, solid advice right there.
No plates and print off the Transit Form, fuck'em if they don't like it. It still has the windshield reg. sticker so if he does get pulled over he'll have the form you gave him and all the info from that form will match the reg. sticker and hes free to go, unless that Ninjas is speeding in that hopped up Stang then he will have to deal Officer Trooper or LEO on his own.

Go to TXDMV and fill out the Vehicle Transfer Notification form. Should cover the toll fees that the buyer racks up.I fave one pending with NTTA. Wish I pulled the plates.

In CA the sticker goes on the plate, there is no windshield sticker. All solid advice though, I'll see how we need to tweak it west coast style.

beware of all the setups going on right now . never meet at walmart or some place like that and be damn sure you are not followed home . good idea to visit your bank on the way just to give the impression you deposited the cash ( they have your address ) . marketplace is full of scams right now .

I still have a lot of family around the Houston area so I read the news daily and crime has gotten really bad there. It’s real bad even around areas that used to be nice. I lived in downtown 12 years ago and it was pretty safe, midtown was even safer. Now there’s shootings and robberies all over and spreading like wildfire daytime/nighttime doesn’t matter.
