  • Asking for good prayers and wishes for a friend...

A very good family friend's husband slipped in his driveway about a week ago. He fell in such a way that the weird impact/landing position crimped his spinal cord just below his neck. He was in the ICU for a week, and has had a few surgeries to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord, and is now in the Baylor Rehab Center in downtown Dallas. He has regained some use of his arms, but he cannot hold his head up, or move his legs, fingers, or toes, or sit up without assistance. He has a very long road to recovery, and may never regain 100% motor skill of his small joints, and may be in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. I'm just asking that you send your prayers/thoughts/good vibes/whatever you believe in this way.

This kind of thing just really makes you appreciate how suddenly things can change, and it makes you appreciate the ability you have to get around and take care of yourself. Thanks.

      That really sucks
Head and neck injuries are crazy, hopefully hell regain the use of everything fully. Have the doctors said anything more, or is it just a waiting game to see what functions come back? Thats probably the worst part, not knowing what hell regain control of or how long it will take....
      Prayers sent!

            Thanks, everyone.

The doctors said they've never seen an injury like his. He was helping someone in his neighborhood push their car out of the driveway when we had the last ice outbreak, slipped, and landed on his back in a funky way and apparently bruised his spinal cord. The surgeries were to try to fix the bruising, which they hoped would ultimately help him recover fully, but the risk, as with most back or neck surgeries, was total paralysis. He couldn't move ANYTHING below his neck before the surgery, but after the surgery he could move his arms a bit. They say if he does fully recover, it will take 6 months of 6-hour-a-day therapy sessions. He's in high spirits, as are his wife and teenaged children, which I've heard helps the recovery process tremendously. The wife and I just left the hospital, and he was using a spoon wedged in his wrist support to eat corn out of a bowl, so he's already determined to become mostly independant again.
