Screw all that. Tell her to stay drunk. Alcohol thins the blood!!

Very common to start with blood thinners to see if that solves the issue. If not surgery will posibly be needed. What'd they prescribe...Coumadin? It's highly used and works well.

I never understood the logic of using opinions from strangers on the internet to validate or disprove what a doctor has told you.

What, you don't think my answer isn't valid?

Sounds correct to me. Lovenox will probably be the thinner of choice (if she is hospitalized) then she will go on a thinner (coumadin) to prevent these in the future. Blood clots can be very life threatening if they move and go to the lung, brain, heart.

              Pretty standard

Blood thinners do not dissolve clots. If the doctor said that then she needs a new doctor. Anticoagulants just prevent more clot from forming.
The treatment for upper extremity DVTs is controversial but the recommended treatment is heparin/lovenox then coumadin for 3mos. Do what the doctor says as the mortality has been quoted to be 10% to as high as 50%.
