I have the graphic design thread down below, however, I wanted to start a new thread, to chronicle this journey.
TOTS headwear
This idea came about a few years ago when our son was about 2. We tried to find hats that didn't look goofy, or cheap, and there just wasn't a good product. I threw together a quick sketch of an idea I had, and it ended up going nowhere. Fast forward a few years and our laser business comes along. Right now, the majority of our business is hats with faux leather patches. I've developed a small network of boutique owners who buy from me regularly and they all ask for children's and youth hats. About a month ago, I found that Richardson was working on releasing a 112 youth (their most popular snap back trucker style hat), so I searched high and low and ended up with a few dozen on back order. Their release date keeps getting pushed back, but I was trying to be patient.
Re-enter TOTS headwear. I finally took the leap, had Blake design a logo, registered a web domain, and started a Facebook page. While all of that was going on, I started looking for a manufacturer for custom hats. We initially landed on a brand/mfg that had some designs, already available, that fit what we were wanting to do. Trucker and snap back style hats, that appeared to be top quality. Next thing you know, samples were ordered. We discovered the level of quality (same plane as Richardson) before our samples arrived at our door step. So, what does an incredibly impatient person do? They order inventory, to move the process along, quicker.
Our samples arrived on Friday afternoon, I placed the bulk order Friday morning. My order had shipped by the time I realized that we had a problem. We wanted to begin with Children's hats and it turned out that these styles and blanks were all youth hats. I was pretty upset, almost resolved to sell through the blanks and give up on it, again. After a few hours of wallowing in my displeasure, I re-centered and got focused for our Facebook live "launch party". We would proceed, as planned, with youth hats being our initial offerings.
Between my disgust, and going live on Facebook, I made contact with a manufacturer that had a reputable list of brands they make children's hats for and had some light at the end of that tunnel before we went live.
In less than a week, our Facebook page has almost 250 likes. Not bad for a brand new brand, though it is no where near what we need to have a successful launch for the product. I'm hopeful that we can continue to build the following over the next month and have an amazing Launch on June 1st.
I'm leaving this here, for some accountability, for myself. I'm hoping that even a few of you, will take the time to share our brand with your Facebook friends and help build the excitement! I will hopefully have a landing page up on the web domain in the next few days and be able to start building an e-mail list to send out updates, product launches, and help build the excitement.
