If you are trying to put on muscle mass, i'd say 1g-1.5g of protein per pound of your current body weight.

Again these numbers are very generalized, and each person really is different in what is required.
If she's doing some intense cardio her muscles need a good amount of protein to build. The slow twitch muscle fibers still need protein to become hard and toned. That's why I would suggest .5 grams of protein to one pound of her total body weight.

When I'm trying to bulk I'll do 1.5 grams of protein per one pound of total body weight. I know some hard core bodybuilders that'll do 2.5-3 grams of protein per one pound of total body weight.

Edit-The ratio also changes if you have a high percentage of body fat.

By saying you're "bulking", I'm assuming you're more inclined to call yourself and your diet a "bodybuilder" diet. correct?

Leah isn't, she's trying to lose some weight and get in shape, be healthier, she doesn't need all that excess protein, and she especially doesn't need it in the form of animal-proteins. There are great sources of protein in beans, nuts, and a lot of vegetables out there, that are 100 times better for your body and health than any animal protein on the planet.

In a balanced diet, where the body cannot use all of what is eaten, the body stores it as fat, i don't care what it is, carb, protein, fat, refined sugar carbs, whole grain carbs, etc. other than dietary fiber, the body stores the excess. High protein, low carb diets aren't healthy, they may cause rapid weight loss, but they are not meant to live a healthy life.

I disagree that .5 g's of protien/one pound of total body weight is a bulking deit and I get most of my protien from beans and nuts but I guess it's just what ever works for you and a matter of opinion.

Did you even read what I wrote?

I never said .5g of protein/one pound of total body weight is a bulking diet, no where in any of my posts.

Also do you drink protein drinks? what kind an how much protein are you getting from them in each one? Because they are 95% whey, caesin or egg protein.

.5 grams of protein per one pound of total weight isn't "excess" protein. That's right on par for keeping, slightly building and toning what muscles she has.

I don't drink protein shakes, I get most of my protein when I am bulking from whey and casen becasue of all the milk I drink.

I'm just stating what has worked for me and what I have seen work for many others. I apologize and didn't know you were an subject matter expert at toning and burning fat.

Please disregard all future nutritional post from SN Cannon.

I didn't say I was a subject matter expert, but I have done quite a bit of research, and practical use.

If she was bulking, I'd say up the protein, but because she is trying to lose weight, she doesn't need 1g/pound of protein. Let's say she weights 150 pounds, do you really think a woman trying to lose 20 pounds needs 130-150g of protein in their diet? she'd be fine with 60-70. Now once she reached her goal, she'd have to find how much actually worked for her to maintain her weight, it's not a here lete me give you this number, 200g of protein, and that's what you should eat everyday for the rest of your life, no matter what!

Yeah-that's pretty much what I'm trying to do. I need to lose about 15 pounds (could do more, but that is a reasonable, healthy goal for me) and get into better shape in general.

According to my trainer, I need about 70-75 grams of protein each day and lower my fat grams intake. I don't eat 'meals', I graze so it's a little difficult for me. He said by adding the yogurt and an additional protein shake, I should be right where I need to be if I cut the fatty crap that I snack on.

I get the Premier Protein Shakes from Costco. They actually taste really good and have great numbers:
                      30g protein
                      1 g sugar
                      160 calories
                      Token Split Tail
