Just something to consider-
Surgical procedures in animals are not always 'apples to apples' from clinic to clinic. This is merely another example of you get what you pay for. I realize that the end result is that the dog is spayed- but how that is achieved can differ greatly. Factors that effect a veterinary hospitals price for a spay can include IV fluids (to stabilize blood pressure and insure hydration), surgical monitoring (such as ECG, pulse ox, temperature, etc.), whether or not pain medication is included (ALWAYS should be administered), the list goes on and on. Now I realize that a lot of people say "I don't need all that shit, just spay the dog" well... that's where the places like SPCA come in to play- however low cost is just that... low cost. Don't expect high quality monitoring, equipment, medications, etc. It all boils down to what you as a pet owner decide is the best option for your pet. However, veterinary hospitals that practice high quality medicine can simply not do a surgery for the same cost as a low-cost program as ASPCA.
