Child pronography laws have handed the feds the power to take down anyone with ease. If they want to they can simply mail someone a DVD full of child pronography, watch them take it out of their mailbox and walk into their home and then have the SWAT team kick in the door and arrest them for possession of child porn. The Obama Administration used a similar tactic to take down high ranking military officers that they opposed by accusing them of sexual harassment or misconduct.

Edit: the single largest distributors of child pronography is still the Postal Inspector and the FBI. They've been playing that game for 30 plus years now.

Assuming that the government is not framing this guy, having 58 terabytes of storage capacity for any thing much less child pronography seems kind of odd to me.

Edit: I recently bought a 1 terabyte solid state hard drive and it wasn't exactly cheap. Having 58 of them if you're not in the business of selling hard drives falls into the category of very unusual. I can hardly imagine the pile of old school drives that it would take to equal 58 terabytes.

For sure.. I know that some of the bigger youtube guys store more than that, but it's because they save all of their raw footage, much of it now being in 4k. A Google search says 4k video files are like 2GB per minute. I assume that's for 30fps so those recording at 60fps..

Seems like I remember seeing one vlog where a guy mentioned having over 120tb and that was probably a year ago.. (I think it was Marques Brownlee / MKBHD)

The FBI has a database of everything that's ever been deemed pedoporn. They can scan for those hash values pretty quickly. They probably had all of the evidence they needed before doing the raid.

Also note that backpage was based in Dallas and the DOJ arrested it's CEO last month and seized the domain. This could be part of that investigation and there was definitely kiddie porn on that site.

You should look up how metadata and hash searches work. They don't need to actually watch the videos unless it goes to trial. With a case this big he's probably going to confess and bring more people down with him.

I know how it works, I'm actually sitting in the driveway of the man that helped develop the software for that. He's a big wig at IBM and has been since the late 70s. He likes to talk shop and I've known him for 15 years.

If I was in his shoes I would insist on the jury watching every single video in court. I watched a rape trial in Dallas in 88 or 89 where the defendant videoed the sexual encounter and insisted that it be played in its entirety at trial. It was a bad call for him because he got 99 years for the rape but in watching the video the gal was a very active and happy participant. I think it was the first roofie rape case in Dallas County.
