Number of officers killed hits 2nd-lowest in more than 50 years

The number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty dropped sharply in 2017, marking the second-lowest toll in more than 50 years.

As of Thursday, 128 officers have died in the line of duty this year, with 44 shot and killed. That's down 10% from 2016, when 143 officers died, with 66 gunned down, according to data released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a nonprofit aimed at honoring officers and improving safety.

The only other year with fewer deaths in the past five decades was 2013, when 116 officers were killed.

"This is one of those good-news, bad-news situations," said Craig Floyd, president and chief executive of the fund. "On one hand, you had 128 officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, showing the cost of public safety, but for the first time since 2013, the number of deaths has actually declined."

Good. The people who bitch the most about the police are also the ones who benifit the most from the protection that the police provide. The police should let them kill each other until they beg for the police to return and to put their boot back on their necks.

I also believe that the police are being put into an impossible position by be tasked with enforcing laws that have nothing to do with the reasons modern days law enforcement was created.

Cops are being way more cautious in the way they approach cars and treat people.

Not to say there aren't going to be some democratic wackos out there, like the one that shot that Texas Trooper in his car a few weeks back, but for the most part LEO's are being a little more careful out there and that could be a good thing for everyone involved.

In the 80s DPD lost 7 or 9 officers in one year. They rode 2 in a car for 5 years after that and would not do traffic stops for any reason unless they were spefically asigned to doing so. Is was a pretty good time if you liked tearing up the streets in the middle of the night. Downtown and hwy 635 did not have a single officer asigned to partol from 10pm to 6am on most week nights but that was also when no one lived in downtown.

No matter what, people are going to bitch either way. If we show up and kick ass, take names, try and do some good, jack booted thugs. If we screw off, hang back, let things work themselves out, lazy.

The other thing they didn't mention is cops are leaving in droves. I have even been thinking a lot lately about taking some other city job to get my retirement, and just coasting. The funny thing is, people are going to be left with the officers that they do not want on the streets. Guys that don't see the big picture and just want to get out there and punish people, or just lazy fucks drawing a check.

This also goes back to the Facebook thing. Fucking "experts in the law", think they know how to do our jobs constantly posting stupid shit. Also the war on cops from the media, constant barrage of negative shit, bias reporting. The silent majority that wants police generally don't say anything, because they are doing normal things, or they just don't want attacked by mouth breathers. I have seen it swing back the other way a little though. Who knows, but the next five years should be interesting.

That was the same year. That officer kind of brought what happened onto himself. I am not saying that his death was justified. What I am saying is that he would be alive today if he had not acted out of line. His type of behaviour would not be tolerated in a PD today.

Despite your personal misgivings about the man Matt is a very competent and honest police officer and standouts amongst his peers. We need more like him. The part you did not like about him is that he is a big redneck who would tell you to fuck off without a seconds thought and you could not separate that part of his personality from the LE part.
