Obviously the relatives are good employees. I would go talk to them in a non-threatening way like "hey, what's up with _____?" He's missed two weeks in his first month." Maybe they think it's pretty shitty of him to do this too. This will open up dialogue so you can let them know that you think they're doing great but their relative is not getting it done. Surely they're reasonable and understand this.
And this is why it's always dicey to hire relatives...

I have a buddy who is a DPD officer and I rode along with him about a year ago. I saw all sorts of stupid crap come across his computer. Anything that sounded "fun" got jumped on and minor accidents, car break-ins, or anything that involved paperwork sat there until the sergeant forced someone to go.
Which has nothing to do with whether you can trust the guy or not, but this is an employment at will state so just fire his ass if you don't like him. Or even better, write him up for various BS 3 or 4 times then fire his ass for documentation against unemployment.

Exactly. They aren't going to quit their jobs in this economy just because their relative is a fuck up. They have rent/mortgages to pay just like the rest of us. If they would be so trite you're better off without them there anyway. Most successful people are embarrassed of fuck up relatives.
