It started out just once in a while but has increased in frequency. I need to hook the audio back though the optical ports instead, to confirm if the issue is with the HDMI though, and not just an issue with the Dish receiver (we have had some issues with our 'Joeys').

Sometimes when I fast forward or skip ahead on recorded programs (or shows that are running behind due to pausing), sometimes the audio will go silent for 10-45 seconds. It usually comes back on by itself, but on the rare occasions it took longer, turning the receiver off and back on fixes it. Seems like it might be the same issue you had with yours with audio going through the HDMI.. Wonder if it's the same thing.

I have another, older Onkyo that always worked fine, we just replaced it because we wanted a powered subwoofer and it didn't have HDMI switching. This one works fine for everything else, so hopefully running the audio through optical will help. But again, it may not be a receiver issue at all (could be Dish), I have just been too lazy to troubleshoot it. Especially since it isn't consistently repeatable.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

I know a few years ago, Onkyos had a lot of problems with the HDMI daughter boards failing, causing connection issues.
I had an Onkyo receiver that worked great, then occasionally started having issues connecting to HDMI components. As time went on, the problem got worse and eventually, it would take you 15 minutes of messing with it, switching inputs back and forth before you could get a connection. Luckily, I had bought an extended warranty on it, and switched it out for a Yamaha receiver, and it has been rock solid for the last 6-7 years.
Almost all of these HDMI issues have to do with the HDCP "handshake" failing. I have had success with some units that start to act up by placing one of these in the HDMI signal path - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is technically a splitter, but I just use one of the outputs to the input of the receiver. It will establish the HDCP handshake with the input device and pass raw HDMI(sans HDCP) to just about anything. HDCP is all about preventing copying/recording, and these devices will defeat it.
Not a guaranteed fix, but for $20, worth a shot. You could always return it if it didn't work for you.2016 Chevrolet SS 6M
