I make right at 60k a year and thought I was doing pretty good when I took this job....yeah...I've come to learn that 60k doesn't go nearly as far as the 70k I made in 2009. Everything has gone up in price...and in many cases...for less. I can't use the healthcare I pay good money for...it doesn't cover shit and the deductible is so high its useless.

the shitty thing about that, is you now have mostly 50-60 year olds in the upper management position that still wanna tell you about how they got by when they were your age. like 60k sounds great on paper, until i run the numbers and spent $10,000 of it going back and forth to work.

The starter home of the late 70s was even less than that. My mom and dad bought their first house in 1978 in South Arlington for around $47,000, 3/2/2 1,500sq. Ft.

Can confirm, have been in San Diego for the last month. Shitty apartments are $1200 a month and that's without parking. About the best deal around is living on a house boat in one of the harbors. There are thousands of them anchored out there. Or just pitch a tent on an overpass, the city doesn't care.

Hell I feel broke a lot of the time.

Then I go through my mom's stuff for her and look back and realize my parents raised a family of 5 on $25-$30k a year and think how the fuck is that possible??
I get the math, today's dollars that's $60k give or take ... I couldn't imagine raising 3 kids on $60k today.

Yep, even the $84k doesn't stretch too far here in Sacramento, which is one of the more reasonable areas in terms of COL. Not dirt poor, but low middle-class at best. I definitely understand why multiple families and zero lot lines are simply a way of life out here, people don't know any different.

San Francisco boggles my mind, why in the world would anyone want to deal wit that city on the daily is beyond me, even if making a good wage for the area.

That's why I left Colorado. 1500 for a studio apartment in the ghetto. 600k-800k+ for a 2 b-room house with 1car garage on the outstretches.. fuck that ill just live in the boonies and have lots of money left over to play with.

Unless you're in one of the high rent districts like San Fran (and even then it's your choice), I have no sympathy for anyone. It's all about choices we make. You can make your dollar go farther if you choose wisely. There's plenty of money and opportunity if you're willing to work. The same can be said about houses. The problem is that people are like my younger brother -- they want the upscale home in the trendy neighborhood with the fancy SUV. That's why they have a $2K plus mortgage with mud tax and property tax on top plus a $900 month car payment. Think of all the roller cars/trucks people on this site have and the time/money thrown at them. I'll stick with my house that we make subtle improvements on and no car payments while I try to stack cash and get out of this rat race early.

I dont get the "big new house, two new cars" mentality that a lot of my friends have. They are too broke to do anything, but they have brand new cars to drive to work and home. One couple cant figure out why we can afford to go to dinner if we want, or a ranger's game, six flags, etc. I point to the 14 and 15 year old vehicles in the driveway that we paid for years ago and keep maintaining, while they have 1000 a month in car payments and 2000 a month on mortgage.
