Fun with tires

So I got new wheels and tires a couple months ago (ordered online) and they look great, but especially after new suspension and lowering last month, the fronts just do not fit. They're 245/45/17's, and I bet I can go at least to 215's and buy me a lot of clearance.

So the question is, I've got two new tires with literally 2 miles on them. I called Discount Tire and they said they'd give me $35 credit for both of them (F that).

So now I'm trying to figure out my options. The way I figure it I can either

a. buy two new tires and store the 245's because they'll fit just fine on the back when I burn those up

b. find a place that can give me halfway decent money for the practically new tires I have.

c. ?

The obvious answer here is to quit being a bitch and pony up the +/- $300 for new tires on the front, but I'm a cheap ass and would love to find a better solution.

I just had same thing happen to me not long ago... I have a extra pair of tires waiting on me to burn up the rears.

You could sell them somewhere but will lose $$. Store them inside if you can since it will probably be awhile until you need them if you don't put many miles on your car.

If you think you will burn through the other rears quickly enough, keep these until then. If it's going to be 2-3 years down the road, I'd be cautious about them dry rotting. Also, and I know this sounds weird, but if you store them in the garage where you have a fridge, I've heard it can age them prematurely. I don't know how true that is, but I did have some tires stored in my garage many years ago that cracked pretty bad, and I did have a fridge in that garage, as well. Could have been a coincidence, and I honestly can't remember where I heard that, so it could be a bunch of crap. There's my disclaimer.

If you want to get rid of them, I'd sell them on Craigslist. I've had decent luck selling tires there in the past.

Oh, and $300 for two new tires sounds super cheap to me. Mine are $500-600 a piece, and I buy 5 at a time to have a full-sized spare. That shit hurts!

Had similar experience when I was buying tires for my Duster project. Bought tires, then decided to go a little better on suspension and brakes and ended up not being able to use the first set of tires. Had the receipt and tires still had the nipples so I ran them on Craigslist to see what would happen. Got about 80% of my money back. It took about 2 weeks for someone to come through but it worked out okay.

Put them on craigslist for a little under what you paid, show a receipt. On Friday (pay day) someone will be all over it!

If you decide to keep them as spares, put these tires in plastic trash bags to protect them. Tires naturally emit their oils over time. And yes, as Jared said, ozone produced by a fridge or other electrical devices can damage them too.

tires have a dot date for a reason. sell them . you will never wear out the rears unless you drive the hell out of it. damn near every hotrod i see has out of date dangerous tires. just like trailer tires. they looked like new right before they blew up .

Truth. My Nitto drag radials which started with very little tread, have a lot of life left. I bought then in 2009, and have not been shy about burning them up.

The plot thickens!

Just called Discount Tire to get 215's, and they won't sell them to me because apparently they have an insufficient load rating for a '66 Mustang.

The manufacturer states that they are rated for 1,201 lbs each, and this is going on a 3,200 lb car. Anybody else want to join in on a chorus of calling bullshit on this one?
