Depends on the scope of what you're doing. My company creates visual brand identities all the time, but it's a big process. It's expensive (+/- $3k) but worth it for a company with a budget that understands how important a logo can be to the big picture.

That said, I totally get it if that's out of your budget and might be able to recommend a local freelance designer.

I used to do this sort of thing over 10 years ago. Honestly, buy Coreldraw and do it yourself. You will get a better logo and save a fortune. You can export it in vector format so it can be laser printed, cut in vinyl, etched, stitched on hats or shirts that way. I don't have any cutting, printing, or presses anymore. Business died with first marriage. Thought of starting again but don't have time and make more money at work.

I totally respect where you're coming from, but I don't think that's great advice for everyone. Not everybody is equipped to learn vector illustration and it's nice to have a trained designers eye on something, not to mention the concept and thought that goes behind a good logo.

            Definitely local/freelance.

That's cool. What's the application? Like is it for a patch or something or a business logo with multiple applications?

In most cases, you get what you pay for. I've seen stuff come from there that's just an illustration from a stock photo/illustration service with the name typed in. Good enough for some I guess, but it's certainly not the right way to do it.

I've had them do a lot of work for me, and I'm thrilled. Just have to go through and find the style of the designer you like

It's a pretty good place to start.

See, that's part of the problem. Designer style shouldn't be a huge influence in a good logo. The message and concept should drive that.

I do see your point though, in that if you are wanting to play the part of creative director and have someone deliver on your ideas, it's pretty low risk to throw 5 bucks at somebody and see how close they can get.
