It was slim pickings here, too. You could work at the feed store, Paddy O'Brian's, and some other random places.
When I managed retail stores, I wouldn't hire anyone under 16. They were useless to me because they couldn't work past 7pm during the school year and after 9pm in the summer. When your establishment closes at 9pm, it makes no sense to have someone who can't stick around for closing duties.

Same here. I'm not very far removed from high school, but I used to bring water pistols to school all the time. The teachers got a little sprinkle more than once.

Brookshire's for me at 16, so I could buy my step-dad's 4 cylinder Mustang. Worked there for over 2 years, and it took a bike wreck to get me outta there.

As a father of a young son, 5yo, I ask in full sincerity.... How would you have taught him differently when he was younger? I did some stupid shit when I was young and I have NO clue how to keep my "hellian" from doing the same.

My youngest is 14, a kid you wouldn't expect to get into to trouble, great grades, great athelete, popular, helps out around the house, does his homework, everything you could ask for in a young adult. Kid got himself into some trouble I don't even want to go into here, they just do stupid stuff from time to time.

One of my many concerns is that the majority of his peers will be raised by parents and single parents who couldn't care less about their children and let them become a product of their surroundings thus making my responsibility of raising a respectful, considerate, intelligent, productive young man even harder.
I'm in the same boat....almost feel bad bringing my girl into this world. How am I supposed to teach her right from wrong? (I'm old school and still believe in the things my grandparents taught me) I will teach her all the right things at home and when she goes to school and sees all these asshats and wierdos its going to be tough to uphold the beliefs that she needs to be brought up with....ahhh the world we live in today!!!

I wouldn't have. I taught him very well and stand by what I've done.

Past the age of ~16, you have far less influence and it starts to become "damage control"...

Teenagers sometimes just do stupid things. I know I did.

How do you know Columbine "may" have been prevented? No one can predict what another person will do, that's why I have a job.

How do you know when discipline will take a corrective action, or backfire and produce another Columbine?

In Roscoes' kid's case, I could see this over-reaction to a hand gesture turn into something very negative. I can see a "well, if that will get me this, I might as well do X" type of thought process...

I'm a firm believer in that the punishment sould fit the crime, but in this instance, a counseling session should be the maximum that comes of this, IMHO.

When I turned 16 and got my first vehicle, a Ford Bronco, me and my best friend loaded it up with camping gear, fishing poles, a new air rifle I had just gotten for my birthday and some leftover firecrackers (mainly black cats). We left to go camping on a Friday, came back late Sunday night. We had never even used the air rifle or black cats during our trip, and I was smart enough to take them out of my truck before driving it to school that Monday morning.

At 3PM, right before we were to be released for the day, the principle of my high school came into my classroom and asked me to come with him. He then asked me the best way to get a hold of my parents. I asked him if everything was OK and he said yes, but that they needed my parents permission to perform a search of my truck. After an hour or so, they finally got my parents down to there and began searching my truck.

It was literally LOADED down with stuff (tents, sleeping bags, coolers, fishing poles, tackle boxes, chairs, all sorts of shit). It became known that there was a third party "drug dog" team going through the student parking lot sniffing for drugs and they came upon my Bronco and saw the cardboard air rifle box that my brand new air rifle had came in in the back of my truck on top of all the other junk. Of course, it wasn't in there, but somehow this gave them probable cause to search my truck. No drugs were smelled by their dog.

After a good hour long search of everything in my Bronco, they finally came across my 6" serrated hunting knife, inside a backpack underneath 200lbs of camping and fishing gear. They found nothing else. I honestly didn't even remember packing the knife for the trip, and it was obvious that I didn't intend to bring it inside the school or even bring it in my truck on purpose.

I ended up getting expelled from school. After a couple weeks of my parents pleading with the school board I got to have a hearing in front of them along with my parents to tell them why I should get to attend their school again. Aside from the fact that I was a good student, rarely got in trouble, varsity athelete etc.

I was able to return to school and graduate with my friends after a month long process.

Moral of the story: kids that age do stupid shit that never even occurs to them. Instances like these can either be learned from or can be used to dramatically and negatively impact kids lives forever.

Yeah, I think a lot of us would be in jail if we were growing up these days.

Kids will be kids and they have to learn how to be adults. I really wish common sense still applied these days.

My 18 year old was pissed off by his high school teacher. She turned her back to walk back to her desk and he acted liked he was shooting her with his hand.

Low and behold the teacher's asst saw it and reported to the SRO/Asst Principal via email who came to the class to remove him immediately.

He now has a citation, a court appearance, a mandatory suspension, and a glorious 60 day (school day, not including weekends) stay at the "SOC" (Student Opportunity Center) to help him learn the error of his ways.....

I supposed you'd hear a parent talk about how their baby didn't mean it, they are blowing things out of proportion, it was innocent, blah blah blah..... not here. He was a fucking idiot and given shit you see about Columbine and all the other shootings - what the fuck were you thinking?!?!?!

his reponse... "I was angry". Well grow the fuck up.

/rant will continue to be on since he has no car or license and the SOC is 8mi from our house.
Nothing like an 8 mile walk to clear ones head about their actions....

Well the up side (if any?) is that no child under the age of 20 is ever regularly accused of using their brain so he's not alone LOL!!

In all seriousness though, you're right, that's a dumb thing to do with the way things are in this day and age. School shootings are all the rage for hormonal misunderstood teens, and it's no laughing matter. You know you're handling it properly so ya don't need props from us, however, I'm giving it to you anyway. PROPS man....
