  • City water

My tenants bailed 6 months early and they let us know 2 weeks later. I just turned the electricity back on to get in there and clean it up but I need water! If there isn't a lock on the meter, can I just turn it on while I clean and turn it back off when I'm done? I'm sure they'll find a way to charge me, right?

Well I don't know about the city your house is in. But our rent houses we have to go to the city and get the water in our name first.

All I know is they do still check the meter so you could end up with a bill. Hell it might get sent to your old renters. Lol. I'd say go for it and if they say something play dumb.

          what city are you in?

ive worked for 3 cities still work for one and all are different at one of the cities I worked at you could turn your water on and off but a plumber couldn't because if he touched it he owned the curb stop if he broke it, another city I worked at you weren't allowed to touch it yourself or anyone, if you needed it on or off you would call and we would come do it, we were 24/7 so it didn't matter time and if stop got broken we would charge you everything it took us to fix it.

as for you being charged, if the renter had water under their name and called to get it disconnected they did a read and turn off, which means they know what the final reading was, if they did not call then its still running which means eventually whoevers name its under will get a bill for consumption.

as far as to answer your question, water is measured in 1000 increments I doubt you will use that much water to clean so I wouldn't worry too much about turning it on and off as far as usage, but don't break the stop!!!!

now for a war story, in one of the cities I worked at one of the tenants never paid water and racked up a high bill! when the owner tried to get water city refused until water was paid and home owner forked out like $900

so good luck whichever way you go.

I've done it before, it's not like you're going to be watering the yard. If it's just to clean up, the usage should be minimal.

I left it alone and purchased a few gallons of water. Maybe I'll ask the neighbors if I can use their hose if I really need it. Thanks!
