  • Traveling To North Carolina

The family and I will be driving to North Carolina from Corpus Christi in March for a wedding. I'm not real big on driving that far but the cost of flying for everyone is too much. So I'd like to make the best of it by checking out some cool stuff on the way up there and back. You fellas have any recommendations on things to do or see on this trip?

I'd take the I-20 route and hit up the Tail of the Dragon...

Aside from stopping at a riverboat casino in Vicksburg, pretty much anything in the Smokies would be good. Recommend avoiding the armpits of Gatlinburg and Cherokee though.

The Smoky Mountan Alpine Coaster, the longest down hill track in US, visit us! Ride the hill and feel the thrill.

Highly recommended...its on your way to NC and its just a short drive off the interstate

Theres also a lot of other stuff to do in the pigeon forge/gatlinburg area after you get off the coaster

I checked it out on my trip was ok, felt a little run down. Some of the early dirt track cars (unrestored) where pretty cool.

Also went by Barber Motorsport Museum which is mostly bikes. Still some interesting stuff and with a drive that long you will need some time to stretch your legs.
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, in Birmingham, Alabama, is home to the world's largest motorcycle collection.

All the cool mountain stuff is on the other side of the state. If you go through Asheville and stay a night there, lots to do. Sierra has a brewery there now, and there's also the Biltmore House. You're much closer to the Triangle though. Raleigh has lots of stuff, but make a trip to eat at The Pit if you can. As you are around Durham and Chapel Hill, you should take the time to drive between Duke and UNC. That's the biggest basketball rivalry in the country separated by 8 miles and a shade of blue. Both campuses are cool. Lots of neat stuff to do on Franklin Street at UNC as well.

If you make it through Charlotte, stop and eat lunch at Price's Chicken. It's a great experience and good eats. Not sure how long you're there or what you guys want to do, but NC offers a lot of the same stuff that you find in a large state like TX. You'll be a few hours from the water at Wilmington and a few hours from the mountains as well. It all depends on which way you're driving out there.

I have made the drive a few times back with my family, but we fly now primarily. I did go I-40 once with them so the boys could make the trip through the gorge and the mountains. We stopped and make the hike up to Clingman's Dome. Well worth the trip, especially if the weather is clear that day.

Asheville is an awesome town. A little hippy, but not the self serving kind. Lots of good local food and beer. Last I checked the highest concentration of breweries in the US
