  • question about a 98 camaro

I know we have a build forum, but I can buy a v6 camaro for next to nothing. I want to buy something to just slowly build and make a fun street car, are these pretty easy to swap motors, trans, rear end, etc?

    thanks for any advice

I think you'd have to put in a z28 gauge cluster and new harness/PCM. I believe you would also have to get a LSx k-member if you're doing LS engine. Also if you haven't already seen't it:

Conversions & Swaps - GM Performance LS swap, LT swap, and LSX swap discussion, how-to guides, and technical help.

The rear ends are easier than a fox body, everything else is considerably more difficult. If you are doing an engine you'll be doing the trans as well which isn't difficult at all if you have a lift and an engine table.

START with a V8 car, much easier. The V6's were real bad on intake gasket leaks and that job is a huge pita.

If it has a 3800 V6 slap a turbo and intercooler on it and go mop up with it. Turbocharged Series 2 3800's will seriously fly.

Can't you get a 98 v8 camaro for a few thousand bucks these day? Seems cheaper in the long run to just do that i would think. Friend of mine got a 02' black Ws6 6 speed car for $3400 out of California 2 years ago so buying a v6 and swapping it might not save much money especially for the effort.

I will have access to a lift, i was just curious if it is as simple as a fox body, i have done one of those swaps and it was super easy.

I could but this is a $500 dollar running and driving car, plus I am in no rush and like to fuck shit up then try to piece it back together.

                        The swap is easy.

You can use the factory gauge cluster
                        You would need a v8 k member
You can use an engine harness from a ls1 car
You would need to add a fuel feed and return line setup from a ls1 car

Where it gets difficult is the 1998 year model
1998 had the ecu with the smallest memory
1998 was the only year with a steel gas tank with an ls1 fbody fuel pump. The 1998 fuel pump is $300 available only as an assembly. Basically the sender, level sensor, pressure sensor, are all specific to the 1998 body harness which is specific to the steel tank.

1998 was the only year to show analog gauge readings on the gauge cluster. 1999 and newer cars received sensor readings from the ecu. Which again is a drastic change in the interior harness

1998 had a 1 year only gas cap design that requires gas cap from only dealer

1998 cars have a drastically different interior harness which complicates alot of things

1998 had 1 year only coolant temp sensor design with 3 pin connector

1998 makes it trickier but the swap is on the easy scale for a 1999 or newer car

If you're looking for a project, my sister has an 02 Z28. 3000 Stall converter, not the prettiest thing out there, but it can be had in the 4K range.

awesome info thank you, the only thing I plan on leaving it stock is the interior. Everything else is getting replaced, like I said project for me and the baseball team of kids I have.
