  • Anyone able to run a license plate?

My uncle in law, if that's even such a thing, bought his first car, a Mercedes on Ebay. Auction ended, he went to pay and the seller said he needs another $1000 to sell it. Said the price wasn't quite high enough.

Seller then says he owns a body shop in Denver and is selling it for his customer.

My U-I-L calls me. I told him to get ahold of the owner to discuss the final payment amount.

Can anyone run this plate number to find out who actually owns it? Trying to cut this middle man out to find out who actually owns it.

Link to auction, eBay lister says he needs $7500 if he wants this car, $1000 above winning bid.

Sounds like the seller is none too bright. It looks like he had a reserve on the auction and the winning bid was above the reserve. Him getting cold feet after the auction closed is a policy violation. Report him to eBay.

You don't need to run his plate. As the winning bidder, your guy will have the ability to see his contact info through eBay.

Yeah I'd certainly report and see what they'll do, but in the end ebay is pretty powerless. At most they can ban the account. But I think you've got the right idea cutting out the middle man. The seller might just take $6500 instead of $7500 if you were to find him and walk right up and offer than.

Howdy stranger. I ran your plate on a eBay listing to obtain your contact info. Decided to drive up from Texas to find you in person and see if we can work out a deal.

More likely to call the police under those circumstances.

Can't you just pay $2 down at the tax office, and they'll tell you who's name the title is in? Can't remember, been years since I did that. But that would make it public information. For a fee, but still.
