  • Anyone heard this about fixing a nail in a tire?

Firestone told me if the nail in my tire is at anything more than a 30 degree angle they can't patch it and will have to put on a new tire.
Of course they don't know until the tire is off the wheel at which point you are locked into a new tire.

My BS-o-meter pegged in the red immediately and we parted ways shortly thereafter.

There's some truth to it. It's mostly to avoid liability, if it separates after repair.

its a roofing nail, not a train track spike.
maybe I'm being narrow minded but the liability of it separating would only be from them not applying the patch correctly.

Yes, most tire places will not fix it. The Mexican tire places will do it for cash and no receipt.

I've had them put in a plug and patch and never had any problems, but in I know others that have had problems.

$10-20 for a tire repair vs 10's of thousands in legal fees and potential payouts is what it comes to basically. I work in a small town and small shop, generally our tire repair is a plug through the hole from the inside to push any broken steel belt away from the patch and then a patch over that to help seal it. I've had a puncture look small and clean cut from the outside and appear to have been sliced on the inside. I don't blame them for stating there policy before getting it apart and I'm sure they replaced a repairable tire after telling the customer it couldn't be fixed, but it is what it is. Sidewall or near sidewall punctures are our biggest concern. If it's a clean puncture and the customer desires, I will put a plug in it but there's always the worry of it coming out or the plys separating as stated above.

            quick hijack

I have a fairly new Nitto DR that got nail in it. Losing maybe 2-3 lbs a week. Of course Discount Tire, where I got, won't patch it due to the tread. Like to get it patched, but not sure if it's a nono if I plan to hit the track in it??? Am I pretty much screwed?

I got a screw in a fairly new DR back when I had my Mustang that was patched by Discount. I didn't have any issues with it and made dozens of passes with it after the repair. That said, it was a bolt on New Edge, so I was only putting about 250hp to the wheels.

I've never patched a drag radial, but I've done a few track tires for bikes that I ran on the street with no issue. The heat and any expansion would be my concern, but being a radial tire I don't see where it would be a problem. I'd try it on my personal car.

I personally never had any luck at getting a drag radial patched. Discount and NTB said no. I guess I could have spent more time asking around, but I just absorbed the loss and replaced. I guess it just depends on the location and who you are dealing with.

ive patches hoosier slicks, drag radials you name it with no issues. the slick was a hoosier quick time pro it was a pita but held fot the life of the tire. The drag radial should be no different than fixing a normal tire imho.

im a big fan of the pull through patch/plugs.

As long as they pull it out at the angle it went in, I don't see why they wouldn't patch it. Just stick a plug in it and be done with it.

unfortunately it all comes down to liability. The companies have to look out for themselves now a days as well as taking care of the customers. Some stuff we have to turn down, like installing customer provided parts, is all liability driven as to why.

                              tire plugging

I guess the inside patch is better, but I have put in a plug on the road without unmounting the tire. Just use the big nasty black stringy plugs from Camel. Stay away from the little foam rubber ones. I have a plug in a rear tire of my Fox coupe, and I light the tires every once in a while with no problem. Sidewall patches are a no no.
