Is there anyone here versed in property taxes, primarily regarding new tax proposals?

I live in Hunt County and there is a proposal for Paris Junior College to be annexed and assess an 8.5% property tax. I am seeing all sorts of stuff flying around on social media about them being able to raise the tax at will and that the tax cap is more than 3 times higher than the initial rate, etc.

I love debunking people's claims on Facebook, it brightens my day. My general understanding is that any tax rate increase would have to be voted by the citizens of the county, therefore, not allowing them to raise the tax rate all willy nilly like.

Can someone point me in the direction of some factual information/tax code that I can link to?

Or, am I completely wrong in my assumption? Also, would the proposal be public information where I would be able to make a request for it?

There is usually a requirement for public hearing(s) before county tax proposals and budgets are voted on. At least that's the way it works in Denton Co. I see the notices every year in regards to the budget for the next fiscal year.

There is no way it would be 8.5%. Maybe .85% which would really suck

State laws cap the increase to 10% annually. However that doesn't mean the appraisal committee can't change how they determine value. The largest increase I've seen was when they were trying to tax for mineral right leases and just doubled the value of our land. It was still under 10% but seriously, they think land in Benbrook is worth $80k an acre now.

Just got my property taxes for this year and they are sky high for the rugrats in Irving schools. I guess I have been paying them for years but they have been in the house payment.

Now that the house is paid off, I thought life would be lower cost,,,,but no. Between the insurance and taxes thats $6000.00 just to stay in the place that I have paid for.

I guess that the way it is.

I'm voting for politicians who are against the property tax. I'm also moving to the middle of nowhere at some point, where at least they're a hell of a lot lower.
