Many questions remain as to a motive for the violent shooting at the Randalls supermarket strip center on Weslayan at Bissonnet.

While officials said the shooter had been 'neutralized,' they would not elaborate on his injuries.

Houston Fire Department says six people were taken to area hospitals after they were injured by the reported shooter.

A shelter-in-place was ordered shortly before HPD confirmed the alleged shooter was shot by one of its officers.

Weslayan remains closed to traffic while officers investigate the scene. Meantime, a triage center has been set up and EMS is treating victims at the scene.

An HPD bomb squad was called to the scene after a suspicious vehicle was found near the scene.

VIDEO: Witness says he was nearly shot at strip center

West University Elementary School said it would open on time in spite of the shooting investigation.

At around 6:30 this morning, HFD scanners reported a suspect was at a strip center firing upon vehicles. The suspect was described as a black male with a revolver.

"We received a call at 6:29 that we had a shooting at the Petco store...the first units were directed to the parking lot where the shooting was still active," HFD's Jay Evans says.

"We now have approximately 20 EMS personnel vehicles on scene. We do not know, we do not have a count at this time as to how many people have been shot, but all of the people will be directed to local hospitals in the area that are going to be victims."

Emergency vehicles flooded the area around the strip center bordered by Weslayan, Bissonnet and Law Street.

Antoine Wilson witnesses the shooting and told Eyewitness News he was shaken up after being caught in the crossfire.

"I literally heard the gunshots past my face," Wilson says. "It's a hard pill to swallow."

Wilson said there was a steady shooting back and forth as officers worked to bring the active shooting situation to a close.

Police concentrated much of their focus during the shooting on an apartment complex on nearby Law Street, located behind the strip center.

HFD officials reported on radio that the suspect was seen behind some trees as he opened fire on vehicles in the area.

Our Eyewitness News crew saw firefighters and officers running up and down the street as the gunfire continued.

From the air, Don Armstrong reported seeing bodies on the ground as officers ran between cars and buildings in search for the suspect.

According to Texas Lawyer's news this afternoon:

Houston Shooter, a Lawyer, Was Wearing Uniform With Nazi Symbol
The Houston lawyer who was identified by CNN and others as the gunman killed by police in Houston on Monday morning after injuring nine people was wearing an old military uniform with a Nazi symbol on it, police said.

Capt. Dwayne Ready of the Houston Police Department told reporters at a press conference late Monday afternoon that the suspect was wearing a "historic or vintage type" uniform and interim Police Chief Martha Montalvo said an "old Nazi emblem" was on the uniform.

While HPD did not identify the shooter at the press conference, CNN and others have identified the shooter as Houston solo Nathan DeSai.
A total of nine people, all adults, were injured in the early-morning shooting near a southwest Houston strip center. Ready said police were called to the scene at about 6:30 a.m., where an individual was "shooting randomly at passersby." The suspect was killed in a shootout with police, in which at least 75 shell casings have been recovered, Ready said.

Two guns, a .45 semi-automatic handgun and a rifle known as a "Tommy Gun" were found near the shooter's body or in his vehicle, a Porsche, Ready said. He said the shooter had about 2,600 rounds of ammunition.
In a search of the shooter's apartment, police found vintage military equipment, some dating back to the Civil War, Ready said.
While the investigation is continuing, Ready said, "We believe he acted alone."

Perrye Turner, special agent in charge at the Houston FBI, said they have found "no nexus" to terrorism.
DeSai's former partner, Kenneth McDaniel, said they had jointly agreed to close McDaniel & DeSai in February and they have not spoken for months. "It was a mutual decision to close our law firm. We thought we had better chances to go out on our own," said McDaniel, now a solo practitioner in Katy.

HPD said hours after the shooting that the suspect was "reportedly a lawyer," and officers were investigating to determine if "issues" at his firm led to the violence. However, McDaniel said to his knowledge DeSai had been practicing on his own since they went their separate ways in February. On DeSai's LinkedIn page, he prominently announced that he "no longer has any affiliation with Kenneth P. McDaniel" and their firm is "closed and unwound." McDaniel said they were partners for about 12 years, and met at the Bob Casey Federal Courthouse in Houston. McDaniel & DeSai had a general practice, McDaniel said, but he's concentrated on criminal defense since the split. He said he did not know what kind of work DeSai has done since they dissolved the partnership, but his listing on the State Bar of Texas website said he handled business, criminal and family law. "Nathan was a good, competent lawyer. He's in good standing with the State Bar," McDaniel said.
McDaniel said he received a call before 8 a.m. Monday from the Houston Police Department informing him it had sent cars to his house and office to check on his safety. "I knew something was going on at that point," he said. "It's just a horrible situation. I'm just watching on TV and it looks like although people were injured no one has died. I'm very happy for that. I'm very sad for Nathan."

Shortly after 7 a.m., HPD announced an active shooter situation near the intersection of Weslayan and Bissonnet streets, about seven miles from downtown Houston, and soon said that the suspect had been shot and killed by officers.

I wonder how one can be an inactive shooter. That would probably break physics and tear the boundary between real space and immaterium (the warp.)

Edit: Cudos to whoever made the tag "nein people shot."

Guy starts shooting: he's an active shooter. Guy stops shooting (gives up, takes himself out, or is taken out): he's no longer an active shooter.
