After the death of my Dad in 2002, I purchased "pre-need" policies for myself, my Brother and my Mom at a cost of about $6K each. Basically an insurance policy that pays out upon your death to the funeral home to cover your funeral expenses. A pre-need arrangement makes it MUCH easier or those planning your services at (in most cases)a very difficult time in their lives.

When my Brother unexpectedly died in 2005, they tried to balk at paying but finally relented and paid up.

In hindsight now, I kinda' think I'd rather be cremated and may at some point change the instructions to the funeral home to do so... it's certainly less expensive and once I'm gone, I probably won't know the difference or really care one way or the other.

Funerals are for those we leave behind...

Way too expensive. I deal with dead people all the time and with funeral homes from the hospital.

Best way to go - straight to the crematorium, no viewing and scatter the ashes. You can usually contact a crematorium directly and get a cheaper direct rate. You can usually get the body transported and creamated for $600-700.

People are weird when it comes to funerals. Funeral directors are sales people and this whole industry is a cash cow. While emotions run high, people just need to think. Why in the hell do you need to preserve a body for 50-100 years? THEY ARE DEAD

word, hell just tie a weight to my leg and toss me over a bridge. It will be a good conversation piece for someone when I break loose and float around.

Why would they balk? Seems like a pretty open/shut case. (no pun intended)

There was some kinda' time frame (2 years?) that the policy/plan was not required to pay off if you died before a certain date... My Brother was right at the threshold on the timing.

They would have simply refunded the money on the policy instead of paying burial costs... The Funeral Home (that sold the plans) got involved and convinced 'em it was a legit claim.

My hope is to know when I'm going, not tell anyone, go skydive and never open the chute, then have my attorney deliver a letter letting them know I went out on my terms.

An older family member recently passed away who desired to be cremated. When she passed her body went directly to the crematorium which charged $620. A nice box from Pier 1 was $30. A memorial service was held at the assisted living home where she lived the last 6 years of her life for N/C. Some refreshments + a printed pamphlet with her history and the total cost for the funeral was about $800. It was a nice respectful service and remaining family and friends were able to pay their respects.

When my brother passed a couple years ago his wife didn't have the cash for anything elaborate. In fact, she didn't have any cash. My parents split the cost of cremation (which he wanted anyway) and they (Niece, Nephew and SIL) kept and scattered his ashes. We had a family gathering at my dad's house, and then my SIL had a gathering for friends at a local park.

That would be more than sufficient for me. Though, if she wants to inter my ashes, that's cool.

I want to be cremated, but it is against the woman's religion or some shit. Fuck her, she can pay for her own goddamn funeral.

I want my remains scattered across fair park during the state fair. I dont want to be cremated.

When my Dad passed away 2 years ago we already had the plots payed for years ago and it still cost damn near $12 thousand to put him in the ground.

When we went to do the headstone I found a nice one through an outside company for about 70% less than the cemetery wanted for the same stone. They found out I didn't want to buy through them the cemetery said it would cost me the 70% difference in price for them to "install" the headstone, I wanted to choke those people out. I am talking charging $500+ to dig a hole 16" x 36" x 8" deep to set a headstone.
