Let's say you had some niche' valuable thing to sell...

It appears we have one of those Beanie Babies that is actually worth something. Trouble is, there are several on eBay just like it for $25,000....and they aren't exactly selling like hot cakes. Certainly people read some Internet post (because they are all true) that this particular one is worth $25k. Not that I buy into that, but if you had something like this, how would you go about getting it appraised and marketed where you are most likely to get the most? Its not like jewelry, or guns, or an actual antique. I don't know if eBay is the best choice.

Put it up on EBAY for 20K. See if there are any serious offers.

I'd cozy up to a forum dedicated to the subject. I don't know for sure if that gets you the most money, but I do think it'll move that way. Usually people on a collectibles forum have the best understanding of market value and are willing to pay fair market price.

Collectibles like that are worth what someone will pay, plain and simple. You can have 10 "experts" tell you that it's worth $25k, but if your highest offer after a year of putting it out there is $5k, it's worth $5k.

With that said, I don't see an issue with putting it on Ebay with a high-water mark price, you aren't hurting your chances of getting top dollar by doing so. I also wouldn't take not getting any offers at a given price to be an indication of lack of value. As Blake said, do a little digging into what kind of beanie baby community there is, both to help decide on your asking price, and to get the them advertised to the right group of potential buyers. Above all that I think it's going to take perseverance and patience to get top dollar, those low-ball offers won't disappear.

There is more reason behind the value than just having the item. Perhaps the ones worth money have some defect from the manufacturer like backwards lettering or one blue and one green eye. There are many reasons why the values of some items are worth more than others. I would reach to a local toy collector/appraiser to get a proper value before wasting your time putting something that high of value up on eBay especially since it might be worth more or less and you're going to have to be able to answer questions that are asked about the product intelligently. There are many around toy appraisers around Dallas. Some will even do that thing where they will sell it for you and take a cut and give you the rest, I forget what its called.
