  • Buying a car that was 'totalled' by insurance, but title shows clean.

I'm buying a commuter that has very light rear end damage (bumper, deck, spoiler, lights).

The insurance totalled the car and the owner bought it back.

The owner already had a clear title in his possession.

So, is the car now salvaged in TX's database, and will I be forced to do a salvage inspection and pay the salvage rebuilt fee when I transfer it?

I've never messed with a salvage/rebuilt. Figured I'd ask here.

    Thanks

I bought one a few years back that was a clean title I handed in to be told it was salvage. Original owner, never got the title branded because it hadnt been transferred. I didnt have to anything out of the ordinary at the tax office.

Bummer. My seller is disclosing that he thinks it's salvage, but it doesn't show it. He also said when he renewed the stickers, they didn't ask anything.

      Thanks for the info

It depends. My sisters car was deemed a total loss but not salvage. They cut my parents a check but did not issue it as a salvage title, I believe partly because the accident was not her fault.

On the other side I've had a vehicle deemed a total loss and Insurance took my title when I received the check. I received the title back in the mail after it was submitted to the state as a salvage title

If the insurance company didn't take possession of the vehicle then it shouldn't show as salvage on the title. My truck totaled a few months ago but nothing happened with the title. My insurer had me text him photos of the title to prove there weren't any liens. Now it shows a previous total loss in their database that they may share with others but the state doesn't show it. In fact I just ran the VIN through Autocheck and it's still showing to be clean.

Can you run the vin for me? I'm curious if it shows up or not.

Thanks for the info. does it say anything about clean vs. salvage?

Needs a spoiler, bumper, and maybe a hatch. This is 'severe'

It's not a beater. Trust me. My dad owned one, and it was just the regular, non-SRT model. The first few years were fine, but as soon as the warranty was up, there were little things that kept going wrong, electrical gremlins, etc. He was in it for almost 10k in repairs in the three years he owned it after the warranty was up, and he finally had enough and traded it in. They are HUGE, heavy pieces of shit.

Also not sure if you know this, or not, but they are basically a Mercedes SLK in (ugly) Chrysler sheet metal.

The title does not show to be salvage.

There are tons of decklids out there for these but nothing with the SRT spoiler.

Snyder's even has a black one. They may have the bumper as well but it's not inventoried.

There's a black one at LKQ in burleson with spoiler, and a bumper that can be shuttled in.
