Throwing more money at a failing educational system hasn't magically fixed it in the years/decades running up to this, so it stands to reason that it will not work this time around.
Agreed.... I for one am tired of seeing "band-aids" placed on this stuff.
The boys\girls in Austin need to figure this stuff out. I'm sure that if they can't we can find those who can. I'm tired of our State\Federal Gov throwing money at EVERYTHING to maintain the status quo and changing next to nothing to solve the actual issues.
I can't wait to see what kind of increased tax proposals they come out with next. Don't worry the tax payers will come to the rescue once again, just like we always do. Don't worry about the fact the you work hard for what you have/earn, just suck it up and keep paying more taxes for the good of the State. Here's an idea, maybe the State of Texas could actually try being more frugal in it's spending. Wow, what a concept.
New Stadium in Allen ISD was a cool $65 million or so. You should look at the cost of the new Prosper High School. Fuck, go look at the building! It's absurd! Though I understand some of it was private funding, the old high school was only around 5 years old and now sits empty.
Cutting football programs is shooting yourself in the foot. That's a lot of revenue. There has been wasteful spending for decades. This news isn't exactly groundbreaking. Everyone saw it coming. If the govt has proven anything, it's that it can't run anything lean, or efficient.
Interesting side note and someone who knows more may be able to chime in.
It is my understanding that the way the Robin Hood plan works is that school districts that rake in tons of money from property taxes, Southlake for example, have to send excess amounts (not sure how that is calculated) to the state for redistribution. Capital projects are excluded from that calculation as to what is excessive. So when you see giant stadiums and nice new buildings, in the eyes of the school district, that represents money that would have been sent to Austin to educate illegal aliens in South Texas.

Voting is a constitutional right, overthrowing the government isn't.

We paid less, too. I even commented to Craig about how we paid LESS in taxes this year-WTF??
The amount of property taxes collected by school districts was reduced as part of the $1 tax on cigarettes deal. Essentially the state said they would make just as much money from the cigarette tax and that would be sent to the schools.
I have $1 that says the cig tax funds have been diverted. I have another $1 that says they will try to raise ISD taxes back to where they were and keep the $1 cig tax in place.
Anyone who says we should just raise taxes is missing the point here. Handing the goverment more money won't fix any of this shit. Demanding that government spend what it is given wisely is more important. Government shouldn't run to us everytime there is a budget problem, it ruins the private economy.

Apparently your district lost funding a long time ago...

Look all you want, she can't find anyone else who treats her as bad as I do, and I keep her self esteem so low, she wouldn't think twice about going anywhere else.
Parents aren't the only ones paying for children to go to school. Looked at your property taxes lately? I get to pay over 3k a year towards school funding and I don't even have kids.
In the same boat here, not only do I not have kids, but I don't even like kids.
I think some of you guys need to re-read the title: Scary stuff-parents, you need to be paying attention
While of course Leah (and I) are concerned about her potential job loss, the bigger issue here is how it will impact your kids. What do you think is going to happen to the already sucky system when they will be taking away more teachers and programs that are out there.
Schools / Districts and legislators aren't re-working anything, they are just looking at what they can cut.
What Leah and the UEA is saying here is that this will certainly be a detriment to the children and agree that the legislators and school boards need to find a way to correct the problem. Some people in here said that throwing more money at the district is a bandaid but IMO CUTTING the money is the bandaid. School budgets should not be cut, they should be tasked with doing more with what they have.
I also cringe everytime I hear someone say "I have to pay for schools and I don't even have kids!" That may be true but IMO you are thinking about it wrong. Those of YOU who got a public education are just paying back what you consumed.
