  • Oscillating Multi-Tool

Looking at purchasing a nice Oscillating Multi-Tool. Don't know too much about them. Do you fellas recommend a corded or cordless one? Was looking at the Dremel 4 Amp but then saw the Dewalt 20 Volt Cordless and I already have a 20 Volt Cordless set so wouldn't mind adding to it but only if it works as good as a corded one.

I use the HF one that goes on sale for 14.99 every once in a while, no complaints about it and i use it pretty frequently

I picked up a corded dremel when I started this recent round of remodel work and it works great, but there have been a few occasions where cordless would have been more convenient. I will say I should have bought one years ago, very versatile tool.

How many amps was the one you purchased?

I bought a corded one from Sears, and I've used it a lot for trim and flooring work mainly. Other than the cord getting dirty I have no regrets. It really depends on the work you use it for and the length of time (unless you have multiple batteries).

I bought a corded one from Harbor Freight when we did our floors. I used it to undercut all of the door jambs and even to cut the flooring in some cases. It worked perfectly..

I have a corded Dremel and as mentioned earlier, I too should have bought one a long time ago.

Cord vs cordless...just a preference thing.

4amp, but I didn't even know they made different ones at the time. That was just what HD had in stock and I needed it that day.

Never heard of it. What are the main uses?

Cutting in tight places, sanding, cutting dry wall etc. The little hook tool that came with mine worked great for cutting drywall to access wiring I needed to redo.

                        They're talking about these:

I use it primarily for plunge cutting and undercutting the door casing and trim when installing our floors. Carpet butts up against them but the flooring we have looks way better when tucked under.

I've used it to flush cut nails and such before too.

                          /thread.

The Ridgid has a lifetime replacement warranty on the battery. Just make sure you register it after buying.

To me, a lot of it would depend on what you are using it for. As mentioned, I bought mine while installing my floors. I bought the Harbor Freight tool for $15 and used it for that job, and several small tasks since, but probably only a total of about 3 days if you combined it all. Otherwise its been sitting in a drawer for 4 or 5 years. Had I spent $100 I would feel like I wasted money. Also, the battery would likely be bad by this point, or would never be charged when I needed to use it.
