I've had a Nest for three years and it has definitely paid for itself. However it isn't all roses.
1. There is the security threat that Tx Redneck mentioned.
2. Nest has TWICE screwed up firmware updates that left us without heat last winter. Fortunately it was a mild winter and I have two fireplaces.
3. Google owns Nest and they have confirmed that they are collecting data on your energy use, when you're home, the temp you keep your home, etc, etc...
That said, I'm keeping it for now but I'm knowledgeable enough that I can swap in a dumb thermostat if I ever need to.
