I guess it's just playing the odds really. I mean, even a brand new diesel can have serious issues right away. I feel like I am just more inclined to trust a vehicle from someone who has the maintenance records and took care of it rather than from someone who picked it up at auction or from a third party. Not to say all private sales are equal, but just a higher comfort level with the right one.

Seems to hold true with many diesels out there. 6.6 head gaskets and injectors, 6.4 rod and main bearings, 6.0 hpop and head bolts. Pick your poison. 6.7 is too pricey for me, 7.3 seems a little underwhelming even if they are really good looking in OBS. Kinda just leaves 12v or CR Cummins.

we never see bearing issues on 6.4's

cracked pistons on the other hand?

you can get into a nice 6.7 in the low 20's with some miles. They wear them well

Interesting. Lots of talk over on the powerstroke forums about bearing issues and dilution of oil.

Yeah it basically comes down to a stripper 6.7 for just over 20 or a loaded 6.0. Found one nearby for 14k going to check out today

Anyone finds a 6.0 dually I think and needs a clean bed let me know. Like free bitches, maybe. It's a long story.............. and not mine but the old guy that has it wants it gone. I need to see if I can find any numbers on it and verify what it is. Maybe even off a 7.3 or a Dodge (I know I know) but the majority of shit out there was Ford F350s.

I've called at least 5 people locally (DFW area) to ask about a certain vehicle listed and they tell me that it has sold and they have a couple more to chose from, or even if it is available that they have another 2 or 3 options. I didn't even know that was a thing. Anyone ever dealt with these guys?

I plan on taking whatever I buy in for a pre-purchase inspection at a reputable diesel shop/dealer but is that enough precaution? I'd rather buy from a private seller, but that seems tough to find since all of these I have had similar responses on don't have a store front, they just strangely have 3-4 nice diesel trucks for sale.
Consider an LBZ Duramax, best year for the Duramax pre-emissions BS, bulletproof with a few mods, great diesels......

Oh I hear you, I thought the same thing. Was just bad luck on my part. No way that me or the seller could have known. Just that the 6.0L is a touchy motor. There are usually at least five 6.0's in the field of the auction that I go to, I can usually spot the problems based on my experience with this one. Silver lining I guess.

I've even been looking at the LLY. From what I heard its easier to work on the injectors and I'm really not looking to hod rod it so no need for the LBZ.

I'm looking for a early Super Duty with a 7.3, and they are getting harder to find...I can't believe what some are asking for those trucks now.

Where all are you looking? I've been using searchtempest.com, autotrader.com, cars.com, ebay, dieseltraderonline.com.
I couldn't give away my 99 7.3. I sold it for 8 and it was fully rebuilt bumper to bumper.

                              Still baffles me about you...

And OP... Forget an LBZ... If you are looking for a decent deal look otherwise. LBZ's are stupid expensive right now.

I bought what I thought to be a clean '07 F250 lariat with under 100k a year ago and couldn't even get the fucking thing home from burleson. Motor was junk and luckily the dealer took it back. But wouldn't come down 2k on a cummins that I liked even after selling me a pile of junk. Finally said to hell with it and bought a new F150.

I test drove an '08 cummins at another dealer and thought the whole front end was going to fall out from under the truck between 40-65, couldn't believe they were trying to sell it like that.
