I share in your 1st world garage issues.

I've got a nice, roomy, heated shop in my basement, connected to my walk-out garage. Eight months of winter here is perfect for working on stuff in said shop/garage. But, fuck me, the door is only 7' tall. My truck is 7'5" tall. Working on it outside in the winter is not an option (I've done it when I've absolutely had to, and it sucks soooo bad). And shit, when the weather is nice here, I want to be on the trails, or at camp, or getting some flies wet.

    It's a bunch of bullshit!

My next house will be a hanger in Hicks Airfield. They have full size houses built in some and still tons of shop space left over.

Right now we have a 3 car and a 16x24 shed. The wife gets the 2 car side for her Mustang but it shares space with the gym equipment and a bench of mine. It is 26' deep so there is plenty of room. The single car side is my Cobra and "shop" area. I've thought about adding 10-12' to the side of the garage but it just isn't in the budget. My daily, the truck, sits outside in the sun and bakes.

When I didn't really have a garage, or a house for that matter, I put the Cobra in storage.

We've also got plenty of shop space for rent down the road from us. It's the complex where Brooks had his shop with the dyno and where Matt has his now.

In honor of the forum....find you a single lady with an empty spot in her garage and park your car in her garage.

Buy a cheap set of "winter" wheels and tires, as small as will fit on the hubs, and fab up an air ride set up while you're in there.

I have a great set of tires that I use year-round. I do actually still drive the truck and use it on trails in the winter, so changing to something smaller wouldn't make any sense. Air-ride also isn't going to help get me any lower with my current suspension.

I meant to get a set of say 13' rims and shorter sidewall tires to lower you enough to get in the garage, assuming that you would store the truck and work on it for long enough periods of time to justify swapping wheels once or thrice a year. Not as convenient as having a taller garage door, but could work.

You can't put 13" rims on these trucks. 17 is the smallest. But again, I still use the truck throughout the winter, so changing to a smaller tire wouldn't make any sense. It would be different if I just stored it for long periods of time.

Time to build on to the garage then.

What's the height once you're inside the garage/past the door?

It's 8' tall inside the garage from floor to ceiling. If the opening itself was made larger, I'm still not sure I would be able to clear the opened door itself, as it has to hang down from the ceiling several inches. I don't even know how close I could tuck it up to the ceiling and still have it close properly at the top part of the opening. I think if I ever had the opening made taller, I would also need to go with something like a barn door setup.

Actually, double swing out doors would probably allow you to raise the door height without the worry of where the rolled up door will do. The down side is that the doors may be a PITA when opened.

Maybe those accordion style doors they put facing patios.

Like these but not solid glass (if they can be found):

I actually told Lea that one of my must have's if / when we move up there is a good sized garage / shop, preferably detached. Something we could easily get vehicles into with plenty of room for an actual work area, etc.
