It's not new. A friend of mine, when I lived in OKC, had a gutted 1991 Honda Civic hatch that was completely done in blue painter's tape, back in 2011. It looked pretty good for a while, actually.

I'm just going out on a limb here...but I think he is referring to the single line of blue tape on the back window for "back the blue"
I never knew anyone would tape an entire car or part of one with painters tape. Is there some sort of benefit that I'm missing?? Or is this just the new "in" thing??

I've seen it where blue painter's tape was put on the front and wheel wells of cars as sort of a poor man's car bra.
But yes, he means the single line of tape on the back windshield to show solidarity with police.
I saw it on a hoopty crown vic that I'd bet money was only there to serve as a blue herring so officers wouldn't pull over.
