  • Bone Marrow

A few years back I did a cheek swab for DNA and was put in the bone marrow donor program. I didn't think much of it until last week when I was called saying I was a potential match. They told me I matched a 16 year old boy with leukemia. My obvious initial instinct was to be available for whatever they needed if it could potentially save a life.

I just left Cooks hospital in Fort Worth after giving a blood sample to allow them to do more tests to ensure we are in fact a match. I found out to actually give the marrow, it's an actual sedation procedure in hospital. Pretty serious.

I'm curious if anyone else has ever done this type of donation and if anyone is more familiar with with the bone marrow stuff. I guess I wanna make sure that if I do this it's actually going to help save a life like they are telling me. It's all happened pretty quick so I'm trying to process it all and the potential surgery.

Damn, I respect you for doing this. Don't let people scare you off but it will hurt. My Dad had a transplant 3 years ago.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Yeah, it hurts. But man, it's one of the greatest things you can do for someone.

How does one get on the bone marrow donor list? I probably should research this more before I get too bold though.

Sometimes being a hero hurts like hell. Be heroic for the young man.

It is a sacrifice and there will be discomfort... but if you are sedated it really won't be that bad--ask them to give you Versed (so you will have no memory of the procedure) and bring a driver. You could actually save someone's life. Think about that for a minute... What an awesome thing to do for that young man and his family.

You have to do it. Leukemia is horrific.

This is what they call a real-life, not selfish "come up". I'd love to be able to do something like that.

I appreciate the support. Was told today blood tests to confirm the match should take a few weeks. Hopefully then I can help this kid out.
