Suggestions for camping in National Forest in East Texas

I'm itching to go camping and wanting to try something different than my usual state park. Looking at someplace like Davy Crockett National Forest, Angelina National Forest, or maybe someplace further east like Sabine National Forest. Anyone ever been camping there? Any suggestions on a place to camp? Looking at a place with little traffic and maybe near some water.

Appreciate the suggestions but I'm trying to avoid state parks this trip. I want to go camping somewhere where I don't have to worry about neighbors or park rangers. Somewhere out in the boonies where I have to drive down a dirt road to get to it and maybe even be able to shoot my .22 some.

Appreciate it but not what I'm looking for (don't want to camp out on the beach). Plus Corpus is a little further than what I want to drive for a quick weekend camping trip.

Sounds like a fun trip but may have been a little more enjoyable in early to late May. Screw a bunch of mosquito's while trying to sleep on a hot night. Report back to us what you did and whether it met your expectations. The wife and I like to get out and do some tent camping also and always watch for a new place to try out.

They have dispersed camping at LBJ Grasslands (Decatur) and also Caddo Grasslands, which is up past Bonham. It's just a big area of public land, so it's free, and you can camp wherever. The trick is finding your spot. I have two that I like at LBJ. Both are right next to water. I think I sent you some coordinates a couple of years ago.

Way too hot right now, though. I'd rather claw my own eyeballs out.

I totally agree but I don't think I can wait until it gets cooler. I've got a battery operated fan with rechargeable batteries that I bought last summer, good investment for summer tent camping. And if it's cool enough, I've got a screened hammock to sleep in if I don't want to use the fan. If I find something, I'll be sure to share.

Not sure if I want to do the grasslands but if you still have the GPS coordinates, I'd appreciate if you could send them to me again. Not sure if I deleted it or what but I no longer have them
