Not going to close it in, but the posts will be further out from the house, and we are ditching the steps on that side, so we'll be able to park a trailer or whatever under it. It's also going to extend along the entire back (South) part of the house and wrap halfway around the East side, which is where we will put the tub. We're also adding square footage and stairs to the front deck so we can hang out there, too.

I don't know shit about hot tubs and they aren't really my thing, but if was a buyin', it would come from Costco. From a previous post:

Fun Story: We're in Costco a couple of weeks ago and some dude was returning an 8 PERSON HOT TUB to the tune of $4999.99. It took about 15 employees to unload it from his trailer and they actually wheeled that big son of a bitch up to the customer service desk. It looked like it was at least 6-7 years old and hadn't been used in years. They took it back and didn't say shit. He walked right over to the next computer and ordered another one.

I have a hot spring brand

When I was looking Hot Spring came highly recommended. I had a 5 person at my old house that was good, and I have the largest that they make (Grandee) at this house. No complaints. It's insulated really well, and I haven't done anything to this one but buy a new cover.

They are all basically the same no matter whos name is on them. The equipment is made by one of two companies; Watkins or Balboa. I personally love hot tubs but they are a real bitch to work on sometimes.

I am a dealer for two brands but my suppliers rarely stock them and they kill you on shipping. Costco has very low margins and I doubt you could find a better tub for less then what they sell them for. You can also find them all day long for free on Craigslist and will only have to do a little work to get the free ones running. If you had posted this last December I would have given you a perfect one for free if you were willing to pick it up.

I definitely don't want a used one. I just want to start out with something brand new under full warranty that I can fuck up myself, if at all. Several people up here have told me to stay away from plastic shells. They apparently don't do well when it gets 20-30 below zero here in the mountains. im not real clear on what to get that isn't plastic though. Fiberglass? I dunno. I just want it to last and not have issues with the weather.

I'm also going to have it professionally delivered and set up. I don't have the time, energy, or trailer to deal with it. This part sucks, because there's only one town within an hour of me and they have one small store selling a few models. The next closest places are over two hours away.

You say they are a bitch to work on, are you talking basic maintenance or actual repair work? Any maintenance tips would be appreciated. I'll have a cover, of course. I've seen the salt water option for some of them. Is that the way to go? Again, whatever is best for super cold temps is the way I need to go.

When they say plastic I suspect they are talking about the outside facade and not the tub itself. In TX having a plastic facade is advantageous.

Run away as fast as you can from a salt system or an ozonator on a portable hot tub; they destroy EVERYTHING.

When I said that they are a bitch to work on I was talking about repairs. Sometimes there is very limited access to the equipment or what you need to get to is buried under a bunch of spray foam.

As far as normal maintenance goes, get a good test kit and learn how to use it and be damn religious about it. Put sanitizer into the water before every single use; there is LOTS of infectious shit that you can catch if you do not. I like to alternate between commercial strength liquid bleach and dichlor-S-trianzinetrione because it keeps the PH from plunging and eating up the equipment. Also make sure to change the water about every 3 months. Do not bother using a non chlorine oxidizer; they screw up your test kit readings, cost too damn much, and do not do much at all. I do not know what the tap water where you live is like but in north TX the calcium is about 80 parts per million and that is way too low. Make sure that you keep the calcium in the water at 250 ppm and match the total alkalinity and PH to the temp that you keep the water at using the Langelier saturation index. You may also want to consider throwing a big zinc ball into the water where it will not bother you. Big is a relative term in this case; they have a OD of about 1.75".
