  • New parents - baby monitor

So what are you guys using for a baby monitor? We are nearing our due date and this is one of the last things that we need to purchase.

    Features that are important

    video
    room temp
    audio
remote connectivity is important to the wife

I've heard horror stories about the remote viewable units. I'm wondering if it is a matter of their network security settings not being up to par, or if it is a flaw with the units.

I'm just starting my research, just wanted to see if any of you guys have any experience.

just get a rocker and place it right next to your bed for the first 6 months. trust me, it will save you sleep.

We have a pair of basic Vtech for audio only. For video, I went with a Hikvision Cube 3mp. Can access it from any phone, tablet, or computer. I like it recording so I can go back and see how many times the baby moves at night. No temp though.

We had a Fisher-Price audio only and kids slept in a bassinet in our bedroom at night. They somehow survived.

I have a 1400 sq ft house. When ours cries it easily wakes me up. However we do have one because the wife needed it. Rarely use it.

For real. How did babies and kids survive before all this crap we need today?

Same as when I was a kid. I'm not extremely worried about it, however, the wife is. Also the ability to monitor room temp is a major plus. Our home is 30 yrs old with some heating/cooling issues. This will help us monitor room temperature, as well as help me determine which changes to the system improve the conditions, if necessary.

Lets face it, we are living in a much different world than when we were all kids. The areas we grew up in, for the most part, are all now more populated, in some way closer to more metropolitan areas, and in turn prone to more crime and the like. Hell, I live on the good side of town and the bank 1 mile from my house has been robbed at gun point twice now.

Will it make us better parents, no. Will it help put our mind at ease at 2 AM when we wake from a deep sleep thinking we heard something, of course it will.

Our home is only 1500 sq ft, so it isn't like he will be on the other end of a football field from us, the only thing between us and him at night, is the master closet. I like the idea of being able to check on him without opening the door, or waking the dogs, etc.

Unfortunately that baby monitor is no longer available! They have a new device that appears at first glance to be more of a security camera.

All the stories I've heard the problems were due to users leaving units at factory defaults (for the IP based stuff)....I do not consider this a flaw of the unit.

We didn't go the baby monitor route.
Didn't see a point in getting one.

We did, and expensive one that was a shower gift, camera, wireless, color, blah blah blah. It sucked out loud. We got a cheaper one when that one died, it sucked too.

I will say, black, that having your first kid, you'll probably be treating the baby like crystal glass and be sanitizing everything. You'll soon learn they're tougher than they look. Not saying to not be careful with them, but not be overly hyper-cautious.

We used our monitor for when we were outside and the kids were inside sleeping.

shiiit. I would call the wife on my phone, set it next to the baby and put her phone on speaker.

Do you happen to remember what they were?

This right here! Rock n Play is whats up.

I started making my wife turn off the baby monitor at night when the kid went to his own room.
