  • Need some advice...

Had a guy stop by my folks house asking about my old truck and my wifes old car. Said he wanted to buy them to sell them for parts. My question is how much should I sell them to him for, knowing that he's gonna make quite a bit more money than what he's going to pay for them?

92 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8l Auto
    91 Ford F-150 SWB 4.9l Auto 2wd

The motor/trans in the pontiac have under 80k on them, and the motor/trans in the truck have less than 50k/30k. They both need some work to be roadworthy again, steering gear box here, radiator there.... They're not junk, we just don't have the time or cash to get them back on the road again.

Well I guarantee you he won't pay more just because you know he's going to profit off of them. If this is his "business" then he's going to want them relatively well priced. Buy low sell high!

Is the truck in decent shape? We're going to need one for our boys in the next year or so.

You can not buy late model $1000 cars out there

Due to people cashing them in for cash for clunker and no new car trades

Anything that is runs and drives and is fairly dependable is hard to locate

Both vehicles need some work. The car needs a new driver seat (or at least a new track for it-it's only held down by 1 bolt) a radiator, and a few headlight/taillight pieces (they all work, just a tab on a corner light is broken so it's taped in place, and the tail light lense has just enough of a piece missing-about the size of a pinkie nail, that it won't pass inspection). The truck is in fair to decent shape, depending on what you want to use it for. It hasn't run since Sept '09...I'm 90% sure it's fuel related, knowing my luck, something as simple as a fuel filter. Needs a battery, and a steering gear box to pass inspection. It's got some dents/dings on it. Was in a minor fenderbender, no major damage, just cosmetic. The paint is yellow (has a black hood) and is of the single stage cheap paint-thanks Smith County-so it comes off on your hand if you touch it. Neither vehicle have working air-the car only blows air through the defrost, the truck needs a blower motor, freon, and a small leak fixed. The truck also needs a couple of new tires.

I have the title to the truck, in case anyone is still interested after reading all that, and need a truck. The car, on the other hand, does not come with a title. My wifes grandmother has the title, since she financed it for her. We have already dealt with her on that one, she doesn't care what we do with the car, since we don't have the cash to get it running again. She just wants us to pay her back before she checks out.

The Bonneville's just don't command the cash these days. In non road worthy condition, I would pay $500 for it, fix and toss on craigslist for $1500, probably negotiate down to $1200 on it. The F150 has much more potential, depending on the mileage and condition. When someone says the motor has 50K on it, I assume that the body has at least 250K, probably more. Provided it looks good and starts, I would pay around $1000 for it. I bought my 95 F150 with a bad clutch for $1000. It had 225K miles, but it looked GOOD inside and out, one owner truck.

The odometer on the truck hasn't hit 200k yet. It's close, but not quite. The motor was rebuilt back in '00, and the tranny was rebuilt back in '03....it's a little rough on the outside, but it's pretty decent on the inside, minus the vinyl seat having a few tears in it. No cracks in the dash or anything like that.

I also recommend either fixing the truck up and sell it for more, or just ask more period.

I know hispanics buy trucks in any condition. We helped a lady in our congregation sell off her late husbands Chevy Silverado...like an 87 or 88 model. Like yours, high miles, maybe some stuff wrong...my dad had like 11 people contact him by the end of the day of posting it.
