I can do it a lot of stuff on my own. But if I can pay for someone to do it and it takes half the time that I would with the same outcome, I'm all on board for giving them money.

MOST folks prefer to do things themselves if it is within their capabilities. I was going to hire a guy to install a new attic ladder for me. I figured it would be too much of a challenge to physically install it by myself.

      I was wrong.

I gave it some more thought and figured out how to get it installed with no help while not killing myself. I'm quite proud of it.

I've found that the more I push myself to try, the more I can do. Such as replacing rotted and carpenter ant infested boards on the front porch and joist endcaps.

I think a lot of people just sell themselves short. Of course some are a lazy and other really do have other things they could be doing with their time. I'm good with that. I'm just really happy to take a long look at my house and know that I'm the reason it's a damn good house.

Time is my biggest DIY enemy, but I'll always give it a go if I have the time and basic idea how to do it.

The reality is though, a lot of folks won't even try. I'd never sell my cheap or good drill bits at a garage sale though.

Ditto. I'll try anything once. I hate paying someone to do shit I can do myself, but some things are worth it due to lack of time

Tried my hand at tile, and I'm the world's worst tile guy. So I paid to have it done. I can do light plumbing and electrical. Drywall, framing, texture, paint I will do all myself. But when I got my new water heater, I got the old one out and set the new one in place and had a plumber buddy come solder the pipe.

Hired a guy to help with some problems on my tractor at the farm, just because I'm not there enough to troubleshoot, fix, and still get the shit done I need to get done. So he maintains it now, because when I pull in our drive, I want to unload, get on the tractor, and get busy. Can't afford downtime.

So he had borrowed some tools from his neighbor. He proceeded to drill some 1/2in. holes in the sheet rock, put the shelf brackets up there and try to just screw in some 1/2 in. bolts. I just stood there trying not to laugh. I didn't say a word and we left before he finished.

I watched a guy that I used to work with snap all the studs on one wheel on his car. He was trying to change a flat and had no concept of lefty loosy righty tighty. He borrowed a breaker bar from another employee and sat in the parking lots snapping those things by standing on the bar.
I'm not trying to be an asshole here, but you sound like an asshole in these stories.

The whole reason those two people were in their respective predicaments was because no one had ever shown them the proper way. So instead of taking a few minutes to show/tell these two where they were screwing up and helping them try to better themselves, you just watched and laughed.

I will pay to have an alighnment done on my car and that is about it. There has never been a single time in my life that I let a workmen into my home without being burgelerized shortly afterwards so I just don't do it.

Agree. The guy that lays tile everyday generally is going to be way faster and make it look great compared to myself this is one of the things I pay for.

I've done tile and hardwood floors, so I know I can do it, but it's such a huge PITA that the next time it needs to get done, I'm hiring someone to do it.

Best thing I did was pay to have our kitchen tile laid! $400 for 200 sq ft. I laid it the first time around and eff that! I will do my entry and master bath myself when it comes time.

For finishes and things that needs to look good/have an artistic touch I'll pay. If it's as simple as removing a bad piece/part and replacing with like parts, I'll do that all day every day.

My customers tend to think if they come in to an autoparts store that I will fix their things for free. They seem to think demanding me to check their ac and fill their car with freon will fix it. The common state of the obamaconomy is blame some one else until the fix it for you

I fix everything except electrical, I'm not licensed to is the only reason. I do drywall, plumbing, a lil bit of everything really, at the moment I'm finishing up the neighbors car.

I'm a cautious person but like learning. Sometimes it's not the cheapest to diy, but you know it's how you like it done.

On that note your way could be the wrong way, but again it's how you want it done.

I assure you they both got what they deserved. Im more than happy to help someone learn how to do something new. However, on the flipside you sometimes have to just let someone really fuck something up to learn a lesson. I would never do this if someone could be hurt though. Im not gonna stand back and let someone mess with a hot wall plug or something like that.
