I'll generally try to fix anything at least once. If it takes a lot longer or is more of a hassle than I thought, I'll hire someone to do it the next time.

Pretty much the only things I don't like to fuck with are plumbing and big electrical jobs. I'll change some toilet parts or take apart a pea trap, hang a ceiling fan or light fixture or re-wire an outlet, but anything more involved than that and I stay away from those two topics.

I just put these bike hoists up in the garage a few weeks ago. They are pretty neat, but were a huge pain in the ass to put up:



They are two separate parts that screw into the ceiling, and are supposed to go on a joist the long-ways, but I found out the joists in my ceiling run the opposite way I wanted to hang them, so I mounted them to a board and then screwed the board to the joists.

I have to try. If I find I can do it myself, I learned a lesson and a skill. If I fuck it up, I learned a lesson and get the extra practice trying to fix my fuck up. If I try and just can't get it, I'll then hiresomeone. Those lessons are a little more expensive.

My garage, as you saw Matt, may be a little disorganized but it's favorite room in my house.

One of the best lessons my dad taught me was to jump in and learn how things work, the worst I could do was mess it up.

He had an old TI86 that I piddle around on when I was a kid, took it apart a few times, learned how to put it back together, etc. He gladly took it, and myself, to the repair shop any time I was over my head. This only happened once or twice, but It was a very valuable lesson. It taught me to jump in and figure it out, learn how it works, learn to take things apart and to fix them. The worst that could happen, wasn't really that bad after all.

I run into a LOT of people who just have no mechanical inclination at all. A lot of my homeowners pay to have work done because they just don't get it. men and women alike. I have a friend whose husband is not the least bit handy, and it blows my mind. I just can't fathom how a man goes through life and doesn't pick up basic skills with tools. Swinging a hammer, working a screw driver, changing a tire, etc.

That's how I justify whether i do it or not.

This is how I feel about having the house cleaned. I'm too busy working, making chedda, but I want my house to be clean. I feel it's unfair to ask my wife to do it all.
So this is one of the few things I'll gladly pay someone to do.

I do most shit myself unless it is too big of a job or I have no clue how to do it. I paid someone to install gutters because I didnt know shit about them and didnt want to fuck with it. I will fix toilet, washers, dryers, hang shit around the house for the wife, fix shit in the garage, work on my own truck and the 4 wheeler, and do electrical stuff. I did pay someone to lay sod when we bought the house because I didnt want to do that either.

I grew up in a very frugal and handy family. I DIY everything. I actually felt bad when I had someone else build the transmission for my trans am.

I'm a huge DIY guy. Never had any money and I'm frugal now.
HOWEVER. I did pay to have 1000 square feet of tile done this year. I didn't have the time or interest in that much tile work...

I DIY just about everything. My rule is basically "Im not paying someone more than I make per hour to do a job". I can do my own electrical and plumbing... Im not paying someone $65/hr to pull wire.

I do everything myself unless I don't have the tools, or don't know how. There's a Harbor Freight right down the street so that generally is solved quickly. You can learn a lot watching youtube how-to videos...so that solves that problem. Only shit I won't do as a renter is major shit the homeowner should take care of...that being said..I've worked out deals with the homeowner to install ceiling fans, new kitchen faucet, and washer and dryer at his expense using my labor...he usually compensates me pretty well for labor.

I do a lot. As most said, I'll give it a go at most things. If I can't figure it out at the get go, then Google and Youtube are great resources. After that, if it still looks too involved or too much time, then I'll hire/pay someone. A time vs cost thing.

All that said, to the OP, IMO this is what feminism, the war against masculinity, rise of the metrosexual and pussification of America has brought us.

A friend's daughter, who attends Texas A&M, told me one of her experiences. She went with her biology club to do a habitat for humanity thing. They were to do landscaping. One of things was to plant some small trees. When it came to it, NONE in her group knew how to work a shovel. Repeat, they didn't-know-how-to-use-a-shovel. And this a group mixed with girls AND guys. She had to teach them how it works. That night, some in the same group were amazed at the stars, as they-never-had-seen-stars-before.

Yeah I'm a cheap bastard and mostly self taught, but I know where spending money and finding the right mind/hands is worth every stinking nickel.
