I'll generally try to fix anything at least once. If it takes a lot longer or is more of a hassle than I thought, I'll hire someone to do it the next time.
Pretty much the only things I don't like to fuck with are plumbing and big electrical jobs. I'll change some toilet parts or take apart a pea trap, hang a ceiling fan or light fixture or re-wire an outlet, but anything more involved than that and I stay away from those two topics.
I just put these bike hoists up in the garage a few weeks ago. They are pretty neat, but were a huge pain in the ass to put up:
They are two separate parts that screw into the ceiling, and are supposed to go on a joist the long-ways, but I found out the joists in my ceiling run the opposite way I wanted to hang them, so I mounted them to a board and then screwed the board to the joists.
