  • 3 weeks notice or 2 weeks?

    Alright, I need all of your combined experiences and advice on this.

    Just received confirmation of my new job, and new start date of 6/20. I have no idea when to submit my 3 weeks or 2 weeks notice, and this is why:

    Last year I booked and paid for a full vacation to California for my son, neices and wife. It's 100% paid for. This vacation is from 6/6 - 6/10, one week before my final week of work.

    Do I submit a 3 weeks on 5/31 (after Memorial Day holiday) or do I submit it the Friday I fly out for California 6/3?

    I fear my current boss greatly, he has canned two of my coworkers on Monday mornings with no warning at all, no severance package at all either. I feel he might just say "Bye felicia" when I turn my two weeks notice in.

    Does the company still have to pay me for 2 weeks since I officially submitted it to both him and HR, or am I SOL?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Sounds like you need to submit as late as possible in your case. I once was escorted straight out of a company after submitting 2 weeks notice, final pay date was that day.

    Also, that may or may not be a shitty thing to do. However, at that point you have no reason to fear your boss anymore and can professional (without fear) explain why you're doing what you're doing. He brought it on himself.

        Typically, I'd disagree 100% - but if as presented sounds like a good time to take that tact.

        Had a buddy do that about this time last year, still says it was one of the best feelings ever to get out of a crap job. We all dream of just walking off and he did it. I'm jealous.

          If you give two weeks notice they expect you to be there for those two weeks. If you aren't they'll take whatever days you are absent out of your PTO. Is it possible your co-workers deserved to get fired?

              Give HR 2 weeks and expect the fall out, if possible.

              I gave 30 min. notice once and had 2 others quit the next week,

              If you can't do that minimum notice, he can ya on the spot.

              In Texas they must pay you for your PTO if its earned.

                This is why I always let my guys finish out their two weeks. If I really want or need them gone, I talk privately with them and let them know that I appreciate the notice, let's honor it effective today, but I will pay you the 2 wks any how. Without this approach, you encourage people to leave you high and dry and that's the last thing you want as an employer.

                With that said, if he's canning people who have heir notice, then I'd wait until the last day and tell him that you couldn't give a notice in fear of being fired like the last two guys

                  Ive had it both ways. I put in my two weeks expecting to be dismissed and was at one. Another I fully expected to be told to hit the dusty trail, and they begged me to stay two weeks, and gave me a bonus to stay on another week. Another one put me on administrative leave for the two weeks, and paid me for that time.

                  I was prepared to be sent home, or work it out. Worst thing that I encountered as a manager was to have a two weeks notice put in, and the employee quit showing up, not working when they did come in, etc. I had to tell one that his file would show he was fired if he didnt get his act together and finish his two weeks or he could leave now and it would reflect left without notice.

                    On a serious note, I agree with the above statement. If you feel threatened that you are going to get fired on the spot for giving a two weeks notice, then I would wait until the last day.
                    Unless you're like some of the other Ballers on this site and don't need the money. If that's the case, quit now and take vacation for a month.

                      Let me clarify, the two guys that were fired, did not submit their 2 weeks. They were just terminated. One apparently did deserve it due to poor performance that we didn't know about in our department, the other guy just flat out didn't deserve it and was a hard worker.

                          if it's accrued PTO, they have to pay that no matter what... I never like to burn a bridge, but maybe you can give your notice the friday before you take PTO. If he cans you on the spot, you'll still be paid for your PTO and perhaps start a week early at the new job or just have a week off. Not sure if your financial situation can handle that, but just remember if the guy is firing people like that, you really need to take the high road, no point in fighting that as you won't be able to win and he doesn't sound like the kinda guy you want to go against in that situation.

                            I've always given two week notice, even with a d*ck boss. Better to not burn the bridge reflected in the HR file. That said, when I left from a d*ck boss, I worked the two weeks. When I left a boss I liked, the company escorted me out that day, but paid me the two weeks.

                              Nah. Lots of jobs don't want someone to stick around if they know they are leaving. In my industry, they want you gone the second you give notice. They also don't pay any PTO that you haven't used.

                              False. Again, in my industry, once you quit, you just lose any PTO you left on the table. In fact, they don't even pay any commissions after you leave.

                              For example, at my last job, we were paid commissions 45 days behind, on the 15th of every month. Whatever we "sold" in January, we'd get paid our commissions on March 15. If someone left on March 14th, they would not get their January or February commission checks, nor would they get anything for the partial month of March. And as mentioned, no PTO, even if they had 100 hours they had not used. The only check you would get is for the hours you worked.

                              For that reason, everyone took all of their vacation they had saved up, came back for one day right after the 15th, so they could get one last commission check, and then bailed. It was a shitty thing to do, but it was the situation created by the company.
