I installed the Holley HP box on my cobra recently and the system is great. The different Holley systems are very similar. A LSX swap would be real easy.

Both sucked actually. EFI was still in it's infancy. It was basically a couple of fuel injectors hung over a throttle body with a computer controlled dwell. The feedback system consisted of a knock sensor and a single O2 sensor. Uneven fuel distribution that was controlled by what was essentially an on/off switch for the fuel and timing adjustments.

My 96 has over 250k on it but pretty much everything other than the ring and pinions have been replaced at some point. It's been pretty reliable for the last 5 years or so. All I use it for though is hauling 4 wheelers, dirt and whatever stuff I need from Lowes.

man for the money, keep that engine and EFI setup and just throw a good set of aluminum heads and a good cam at the SBC and call it done. By the time you buy all the LS swap shit AND a new trans to work with it, exhaust and driveshaft, you could have a HELLUVA SBC and a built trans ready to rock and roll. Not to mention if you want A/C and all the other niceties of a modern truck, you have to "hybridize" all the hoses, accessories and fittings to match the old shit in the truck to match the LS crap you put in the engine bay.

I stayed with the SBC in my suburban and I am $1000's of dollars ahead and have 500hp to play with and cheaper parts. I am using the Holley HP EFI setup and a built 700r4 with an old fashioned mechanical advance distributor and MSD box. Clean install and simple stuff. No need for custom LS harnesses and tuning and yadda yadda yadda. So what if it isn't an LS...you will still like and won't be cursing all the custom BS.

        You can thank me later!

He wouldn't need a new transmission for an LS swap.

Buddy I know is selling an '89 single cab, step side, 4wd, black Silverado with 93k original miles. Its immaculate inside and out. He's asking $10k for it.

It is more simple to beef up the existing engine. BUT, the parts to give an LO5 anything close to the power of a decent LS swap will cost at least as much. I did the homework when I had mine.

And a step side. I'd consider that for a nice 454 SS but not a step side anything.

Took this pic of my 98 Sierra Z71 while getting ready to sell it in 2015 so I could buy my current 2007 Sierra from my dad. Before I could sell it my dad offered to just trade me even for it so he could still have a truck around to use occasionally...so its very possible one day I might get the 98 back. Best vehicle I've ever owned so far.
