  • Saving for college

With the kiddo on the way this summer, it is time to start thinking about saving for college. I want to make sure that he has a wealth of opportunity ahead of him when the time comes. I don't want him to have to struggle to find a way to pay for it like I did.

With that, what are the best methods for this sort of thing. Is a 529 the best avenue?

The rules for a 529 are ridiculous, unless you can see the future I would just focus on maxing out your current retirement options. Roth IRAs can be used for college.

Did a IRA a while back. Fucking worthless. Made $11 in like two years on $5k. Read a bit about it and you can get plans from other states as well. I hear Utah or Nevada have good ones. DOSENT matter what school you go to any plan is better than nothing. I need to move that money somewhere else to gain something better than what I have got so far.

Ok. Just from reading your post, you sound clueless when it comes to money.

Good on you for want to contribute to the kiddos education. Don't be afraid to let them struggle some. That's part of the journey if you ask me.

Trade school and military seem to offer better returns for the money unless you actually major in something useful like medicine or law. I see way too many people with expensive degrees who don't use them to push my kid toward that route. Not against all college, just must seem to go just to go. We are just putting money for college in a seperate savings account for now. If he fucks up I keep it. He makes an ok choice, I assist. He makes agreat choice and is responsible, hopefully we can pay everything.
I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

As far as making money on any kind of savings through a bank, yes clueless. I don't mean this in a negative way but you got any nuggets of knowledge to add? Just like the OP I want to take money and grow it for my son but not just by adding to it. I'd like some kind of return on interest.

I got good grades and still ended up at a JuCo and local university. My hope for an ME at A&M fell to a Physics degree from A&M Commerce...

I completely agree that struggle is part of the journey and becoming a productive member of society.

However, I don't want him to suffer the same fate as me. I felt like had I gone to a bigger, bettet known college, I wouldn't have had quite the struggle finding a "real" job.

When he graduates high school am I going to hand him his college fund? Nope, he will have to earn it, and continue to earn it.
