  • Do you do your job for the money? Or the satisfaction... is it love / hate?

You know that offshore company that I worked so hard to get into at the end of 2014 and finally got in?

Turns out that it's not all it's cracked up to be. Lots of reasons why. I'm thinking of leaving it.

I've been doing my current offshore gig a month at time, then off for a month. On my off month I have been doing contract work for my previous company installing plate rolling machines and training customers how to use them.

It's been a fucking win / win for me. Shit I get paid the whole time by my full time job whether I'm on or offshore. I get a bonus for being offshore every day gone. Then work for my previous company on the side.... you can imagine how great of a deal it is...

But my previous company is now after me in a big way to come back full time and I am thinking seriously about it.

In the end I would be taking money out of my pocket, but I think I would be happier. The offshore industry is full of fucking idiots, and that oil money covers of a lot of really stupid management decisions, some of them that directly affect me.

I love those rolling machines, and they are after me in a way that makes me have tons of negotiating power. They came at me with a salary that was twice my original salary, but I am telling them I want more.

The only thing I love about my current job is the money. I can't stand anything else about it, except beautiful sunrises / sunsets, and satisfaction of operating on my own, learning cool new things, etc.., but if I need tech support or management help it's non existent. I build up resentments like you would not believe.

No matter what people say its almost always for the money. As is my case. If I didn't get paid what I do I'd be out.

Not for money here. I was in the oilfield making between $100,000 and $200,000, but I was on te road 1 or 2 weeks, back home for 4 or 5 days, thn on the road. Have a wife and a son who was 3 at the time. I missed most of a year of his life. Oil kept dropping and he more layoffs they had the more I was on the road; I was one of the ones management wanted to keep so there was no chance for layff and severance which I was hopeing for. We were smart ad saved during the boom, so one day I quite and told them why and was out of work for 3 months. Found a job with a 45 minute commute one way and I am home to see my son evey day. I now make about $50,000 or so a year, maybe a bit less I think. Huge paycut, and I don't love the job. It isn't a bad job and it is for a good company, good boss, better industry, etc, but not work I thoroughly enjoy. But I do enjoy time at home, and that is what important to me. I may stay, mY find other work eventually, but for now we are happy and I am enjoying this situation. I miss the money, but it doesn't completely buy happiness.

Pretty much the same boat as you, I'd rather be with my family.

Money. Although even if I had 5x the assets I do currently, I'd still stay here b/c nobody cares what I do. I haven't seen my boss in weeks (we're on a separate floor), I haven't had a deliverable in weeks, can come and go as I please.

It depends on how much money, and what it leads to long term.

I actually turned down an offer that paid a little more because i liked the team at my current place more. But if were talking 25K+ more a year...that makes the decision harder. 100K more and ill work with anyone

At first it was for the experience. Now the only days that matter to me are the 1st and the 15th.
