That's a funny question. I enjoy what I do because I love seeing my clientele succeed and flourish in a very competitive market. As for the job itself... it's stressful and I deal with massive quantities of idiots in our fulfillment group: my company could definitely make our lives (sales reps/mgrs) easier by streamlining fulfillment. However it's been a fantastic learning experience at the worst and I make a decent living.

I love my job, but it still feels like work when I am building fence, working on equipment, welding or working cattle. And it sure isn't for the money, but I step out my backdoor and I'm at work looking over hundreds of acres (750 with what I lease), have my own gun range, riding trails for dirt bikes and ATV's, my own horse and working toward a business of marketing my home raised 100% grass fed organic beef.

But, sadly my time here is limited due to urban expansion. You can't stop imminent domain.

Thing is, it is so severely mismanaged it's almost comical. The technical support is laughable, etc., emails ignored, etc., and on and on... but it allows me to operate on my own and have lots of leeway...

I was hoping to ride out the oil slump until business is booming again, I certainly have my eye on companies like NOV, FMC, Oceaneering, Noble, where I could most likely earn even much bigger money, but I have an opportunity to return to a place where they actually give a shit, treat people well, will allow me a say so in how I do things, and be able to improve processes, etc...

So, I'm thinking about it. Really I am honored to be in the position to make these kinds of choices, 3 years ago I was posting up wondering where my car was, LOL!
I wouldn't count on better management or pay at those places right now. Maybe slightly more pay...but big corporations rarely have better managers. I recently moved from a small company to a large O&G firm for the sake of stability. The competence and technical skills were far superior at the small company. It blew my mind. If these smaller companies had the bankroll kf bigger companies...they would win out.

I do what I do because I love my clients; not necessarily because I love they work itself. The high work load and long hours also has the added benefit of keeping me soo busy that I do not have time to get into to trouble and I firmly believe that I would be sitting in prison right next to a few of my friends if I had not gotten into doing what I do. It paying very well is also an added benefit. It is also VERY nice to be able to pick and chose who you will and will not do work for and to be able to set prices at what ever you want based on having a sterling reputation.

If I look back 25 years I would have NEVER predicted that I would be doing pool stuff for a living. My original plan in life was to be an engineer for one of the Big 3 auto manufactures or to pursue a career in federal law enforcement.

I've had two decent paying jobs that I quit because I hated the work. I enjoy what I'm doing now, even though the money is crap.

Update: Previous company came to me with an offer I couldn't refuse, a position that matters, a say in the direction the company is going, a month in Italy, and a lot of things just the way I want them.

So, I'm changing jobs in early May.

First time in my employment history when a president of a company let out a WHOOOOOOOOP!! when I accepted, and told me I made HIS day.... LOL..

I feel honored, but remain a humble servant.

I do my job for the money. The place I work at is ran by I swear monkeys that have escaped from the circus. I've been there 8 years and it's been 3 different companies in that time frame, and it's gotten worse every time. Bigger the company the shittier the quality of life on the job.

But it does pay better than any other job in my area, that being said its been a good jumping off point to make the $$$ to train for my next career.

All things considered though, unless I was about to be in a cardboard box in an alley, I'd never work in heavy equipment assembly or for this particular company EVER again.

I like my job and I don't do it for the pay. Pay is decent, but I make more off other investments than my job salary. It does have good benefits though. I'll keep doing it until I no longer love doing it.

                                That's great, Chris! Congradulations!

Like everyone, I do this job for the paychecks. I got a promotion and raise just yesterday so I can't complain about the opportunities or the money. But when my retirement plan kicks in (LOTTO) you can bet your ass I will be sippin' rum in the Caribbean.
