  • Does anyone here currently pay for an Assisted Care Facility?

It may eventually come to it. My Mom is being moved to a facility for physical rehab. Insurance will cover the first 20 days, but after that, it is $160....per day.

There is no anticipation she would need to stay longer and I come an itsy bit short from choo-choo income.

HOW %$#@ DOES ANYONE AFFORD THIS?!?!?

I went through this last yr with my mother....... Unfortunately unless you can afford about 8k a month she won't get good care.. Any where that excepts Medicare and the sorts are shit holes..
I couldn't afford the better care and still wonder if the facility she was in had something to do with her death....

      Good luck to you sir

She will be 79 in July.

I know nothing of how Medicare works. I am fairly certain she has it but not sure which kind. If she doesn't, why are there different types and how do you apply?

Come on man, there are some fair places that no-way-in-hell are they charging that much. They may not look like a resort, but that should not indicate they are very poor care necessarily.

Even with Medicare and Medicaid I still had to pay 160 a day after 30 days. And this was not a nice facility. Most barely spoke English

Any insurance, social security and/or the state will usually pick up the tab for the first 60-90 days...After that the nursing/rehab facility will start billing medicaid..

Medicaid will then liquidate ANYTHING that she has...House, car, savings accounts..Basically anything thats in her name

I had to deal with this with my grandma about 3 years ago...It sucked!!!

The cheapest place that I found was just under 4,000 a month

If you are going to sign up for Medicare and/or Medicaid you need to transfer all her property to you first. Or they can go after it for reimbursement

First, prayers to you. It's a rough going sometimes dealing with this stuff. Mom passed last summer after an extended bout of various health issues. Its easy to get frustrated sometimes because its overwhelming dealing with this and working and other stuff.
Not sure what hospital you are dealing with, but most have "social workers" that will review your individual situation and offer suggestions and help wading through the paperwork. That should be one of your first stops. Mom always went to Baylor. The people at Baylor were fantastic and they have rehabs run by Baylor. Its easier for them to get people into their own rehabs than dealing with another hospital.
There was a place in Plano on Shiloh that mom went to for a few days, we transferred her QUICKLY. that place sucked. If thats on your short list, let me know I will get the name. never ever go there.

Most are a shithole... I take in patients from places like Life Care, Ethicus, etc. I wouldnt ever send my family to them. Hell, I forget the name of the place that brought patients to Las Colinas Medical Center, but they only kept their license by agreeing to keep EMS on staff and an ambulance at their facility. Even then, they have 2 EMT-Bs who dont know shit and cant do shit.

Unfortunately thats the way it is and should be. Elderly care is not the responsibility of the government. If you have the financial means, the patient should pay for their care. If that means liquidating, sorry. I feel no pain. Getting old is the reason people save for their own future.

I need to open a high end nursing home.... One day I will.

You need to put their assets into an irrevocable trust years before they enter into the program in order to shield them. From what I have read, it is a good idea to do this at around age 70. The trust can still pay them but the assets can't belong to them, they have to belong to the trust.

This is one reason I got old man's insurance (long-term care policy) 15 years ago. Premiums are not cheap but it should pay my own way if needed.

My Mom's last wishes while she was sane involved a long walk in the woods.
Instead, I had to break my promise and allow her to die in assisted living.
Luckily, I had help from older family that had their own experiences with the process.
It sucks and I wish you the best.

Do your successors a favor and have this handled before it's your time to go. No one deserves that shit.

Work hard all their life, sacrificing just to make sure their family gets the best, for what? To live out their last year's begging for a Jamaican woman to come give them a shitty meal and hopefully the right medication.
Fucking this. But at the same time we have several generations up to the baby boomers who made shity financial decisions, were always in debt, and barely saved anything because the govt will support them on social security and medicare and medicaid. This is exactly what socialism and government entitlements lead to. My mom took care of my grandmother as long as she could but finally put her in a home and she died months later. She had zero in savings and was living off a small retirement check and whatever social security gave her. I have a feeling I will be going through something similar with my parents and my wife's parents one day, all because we have developed into a society that doesn't save for retirement. My wife's parents actually live in another country but it is basically the same mentality there and poverty is rampant because of it. Someone else will take care of it. It is almost just as bad in my opinion to rely on your kids assuming they will take care of you. Nope, most of the time that seems to lead to them sticking you in a home. The answer is save and invest, and like king said the old man insurance is a very good idea.
